RASC Motor Section Middle East Force
« on: Tuesday 03 June 14 23:08 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to trace what happened to my grandfather Henry Edwin Hards - there seem to be no available records.  I've got an address and service number which is T/119244 and the address was RASC Motor Section, 10th Corps H.Q. Middle East Force.  This is the address he sent and received letters from in 1942.  By about June 1942 they were being sent back saying 'Not at address stated, present address not known".  It is believed that he went AWOL at some point, but there's no evidence to support this.  I've tried finding his death certificate and or army records but nothing seems to come up.  I've mailed the MOD but they say they can't give out any information due to Data Protection laws.  If anyone has any ideas on what I could do next, I would be most grateful, it would be wonderful if I could solve a very old mystery for my mother finally.

Many thanks in anticipation.

This would appear to be a case with potential "ramifications".

I think you will have to apply for his Service Record formally. You can read about this at millymcb's  definitive RootsChat posting <http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=651361.0>.

You may have a wrangle over a Death Certificate but an explanatory letter with such supporting evidence as you have may suffice. On the face of it if applied for in your mother's name the £30 fee should be waived.

Go for it anyway and if they give you trouble look to a Freedom of Information request.

Thank you both for your postings, I am going to fill out the relevant forms and try the MOD again!  Hope it's  not too long to wait.

Apologies. I've  just realised that I've confused the generations. As simply the daughter of the serviceman, the £30 will apply and you won't get priority treatment. So cross your fingers and wait patiently.

I've now officially filled in all the forms and paid my fee to the MOD but sadly they said there were no records!  If anyone has any ideas on where else I can try, I would be most grateful.  I know he did exist as I'm living proof of it!! :0)
