Albert Ernest Brace & Siblings
« on: Friday 06 June 14 22:51 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have for a long time been trying to find the birth registration for Albert.  It does not help that in every record that I have found his father has been less than truthful.
Albert was the second (?) child of George Henry Brace and Jane Ann nee Jones.
George was from Wales, Jane from W Hartlepool (but with close relatives in Wolverhampton)

Albert celebrated his birthday on May 31st each year. Possibly true or very close, so Q2.
On 1901 census they are in Ferry hill, Co Durham. Albert is said to be two and born Staffordshire, so born 1898. 1911 has him born in Willenhall, Staffordshire, age 12.

I cannot trace a birth record for him, and I am wondering if he was born unexpectedly when they were travelling for whatever reason, and they didn't register him or if there is a birth record out there somewhere.

Second problem:
George and Jane had NINE children. I have only found five. Could anyone help find the others please ? They are probably in the North East
Known children:

George Albert b & d 1895 Gateshead (Granny registered both events not parents)

Albert Ernest b 1898 Willenhall (?)

(1901 census Ferry hill )

John Hiram b 1901 Middlesbrough

George William b 1904 Stockton on Tees

(1911 census Thornaby on Tees)

Alfred b 1911 Middlesbrough

Both parents died (1931 & 1951) in Stockton on Tees so they must have moved again after 1911 birth.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Stockton Roots has the following records, two of which you already have:

BRACE GEORGE   1904
BRACE GEORGE   1910
BRACE ALFRED   1911

For info, Thornaby was also known as Stockton South and is still considered almost a 'suburb' of Stockton as the two are only separated by the Victoria Bridge across the River Tees, although Stockton was in Durham and Thornaby was in Yorkshire.  The correct registration district for Thornaby was Middlesbrough, although I have found one or two of my ancestors registered in the 'wrong' place.

Small world though... my Great Grandad lived at 11 Skinner St Thornaby in the 1891 census - and just 2 census later your Brace family are in the house next door at No 13!    I'm not sure of the exact location but as my G Grandad worked at an oilcake factory on the river itself, I suspect it was very close to Victoria Bridge and therefore on the 'doorstep' of Stockton.
MORGAN: Glamorgan, Durham, Ohio. DAVIS/DAVIES/DAVID: Glamorgan, Ohio.  GIBSON: Leicestershire, Durham, North Yorkshire.  RAIN/RAINE: Cumberland.  TAYLOR: North Yorks. BOURDAS: North Yorks. JEFFREYS: Worcestershire & Northumberland. FORBES: Berwickshire, CHEESMOND: Durham/Northumberland. WINTER: Durham/Northumberland. SNOWBALL: Durham.

I am trying once again to find the missing children and any record of granddad.

If you have a few spare minutes and would like to help I would appreciate it.

How unusual would it be in this time frame for so many births not to be registered if that is the case?

I have also noticed that in 1911 there are alterations to the form. They change it from a total of 5 and re-write 8 with 5 dead and three alive. An opinion please as to whether I should consider that it was the original total of five that was correct and that the deaths should have read two? Then there would be one missing and one known about but not seemingly registered. I think that is perhaps wishful thinking on my part.
