St James Church Shaftesbury/Alcester
« on: Sunday 08 June 14 08:41 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm visiting Dorset in a weeks time and am looking to visit this church and look for some gravestones.  I am waiting on information at the moment re names and dates but am going to need a map with plot numbers - is there one available anywhere?

I tried Dorset OPC but they haven't replied.

Any assistance gratefully received.

I'm also looking to visit Alcester but it doesn't seem to be on the map!  Is it near Shaftesbury?

Thank you  :)

Alcester is within St James Parish in Shaftesbury listed as a liberty of it??

Kay

Edit - the Union Workhouse was at  Alcester Cottage and I think the Liberty of Alcester was the part of the Parish of St James beyond the  Municipal Borough of Shaftesbury

Have a look at the Bing OS maps - Alcester is shown on the south west side of Shaftesbury

Thank you that census is interesting  :)

The family I am interested in were in Alcester 1901/1911 but no more specific address that that is shown.

One certificate in 1898 has St James Street Shaftesbury so am surmising that is near the church.

Yes -  St James St is the street from leading from Gold Hill, Shaftesbury to the church.  Have fun.   I got engaged in Shaftesbury too many years ago to count  ;D

Belated congratulations on the engagement ;D

Is Gold Hill the steep one on postcards?  Have been there once many moons ago.

Dorset ancestry isn't easy. 3 places so far aren't even on the map.  We have Alcester, Haydon and Clifton Maybank.  The latter quite by chance we came upon the place name sign on a previous visit but there didn't seem to be anything there!  The family lived at No 1 Clifton Farm Cottage in 1881.
Am guessing there was a farm and a cottage or two and that was it.

You don't know whereabouts Haydon is do you please?

Hi,

Dorset FHS have transcribed MIs for Shaftesbury:

http://www.dorsetfhs.org.uk/research/mis.htm#S

They might have a plan for St James or know where you might be able to find one.
