Help for Converting .gft file to GEDCOM?
« on: Sunday 08 June 14 18:44 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am a new poster here so apologies if I'm doing this wrong!  My problem is that I have some .gft files from an old GSP family tree maker and I can't find any way of converting them to Gedcom.   It's a very extensive family tree and is contained in several .gft files.  Unfortunately my grand-uncle who had done most of the research has now passed away so can't help me.

The family tree was completed around 2005/2006 so I think it was possibly GSP Family Tree Maker V4.

I have a feeling that this GSP software could convert the files to Gedcom but unfortunately I don't have the software anymore.  I can't find it online for download either.  I do have an old Windows XP computer still, so I should be able to use the software if anyone can tell me where to download it from?

Otherwise if it's not too much work, does anyone have a way of converting .gft files?

I greatly appreciate any help the forum readers can give me on this.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve, and welcome.

There's a UK company called My Family which advertises a data conversion service, including .gft to GEDCOM. You'd have to pay them, of course...

Hi Steve, welcome to Rootschat! :)

Please make a couple more posts and I will send you a personal message with details.

I have just looked through a pile of old FH cds, and I think I have just what you need!
The Sunday Times gave away FTM 2004! in one of their suppliments... would that help if you still have an old pc/laptop to install it on. It says its for Windows 98/ME/XP on the sleeve.  If you don't have access to an old pc, I might be able to load the CD onto an old XP notebook, I will be happy to convert it if you send me the file.

Or I can post it to you. Send me a pm after you have made posted 3 messages on the boards... here will do  ;D

Jenny
Now feeling slightly embarrassed that not only do I have these 10 yr old cds still hanging around... I also put my hands on them straight away!  :-[ :-[ :-[

I have just looked at the manual on the CD and the file formats it will open are FTM, GEDCOM, or AFT ?

Hi

I've looked at old posts on the topic.  It seems to be a common question but there's no definite answer that I could find.

I did see a couple of websites which offer this service for a fee but it'd cost me about £150 as I've quite a few separate files to convert.

Jc26red, I'll try to send you those files over the pm and my details.

Steve

Oh my!  is that the price some people are charging to convert files!

I know someone who enquired about having an old will (short) transcribed and the starting price was £180!

I think I was in the wrong business ::)
