Not sure about this discussion.... :-\

Richard Heaton's Index to Digitalised British and Irish Newspapers is a fantastic collection of newspaper information and links that has been put together for free and available to view on RootsWeb, on the links above.

There is no implication that these are availabe online for free, although some may be (for example if you have a library card that lets you access the Gale databases). Some Lanarkshire newpapers are also available to view for free on google such as here http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=GGgVawPscysC and  http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2mus-XyGPC0C  Likely other sources may be available to view other Scottish newspaper info for free...but not many really overall.

Depending on where you live, if in Scotland, you very often are able to view historical collections of newpapers at larger libraries on microfiche etc...this really also applies to local newspapers anywhere in the UK. The references on Richard Heaton's pages are very much for digitalised online collections to date...and not surprisingly, given the cost of getting these types of databases online, there will be a cost to view.

Always harder when you live far away from your source for research isn't it  :-\

Hope you are finding what you need in your research on your family.

Hello MonicaL,

Thank you for bringing this Topic back to our attention.
It certainly is a very handy Link for sourcing and researching Newspapers.
Richard Heaton has done an excellent job in compiling this Index.

I have previously accessed some of these, via my Subscription to 'FindMyPast'.

If it wasn't for people like yourself, so many of these Topics and Links would go unnoticed.

At various intervals on my visits to RootsChat, I just choose a particular Subject and go through the Topic headings, just to see if anything of interest catches my eye.

There is just so much hidden information here on RootsChat and elsewhere on the Internet.
Then there is all the information that is held in Archives and Libraries around the world, that is not always accessible to people who live at a distance.

This is where all the RootsChat Members come to the assistance of others.
