1911 census
« on: Friday 13 June 14 13:01 BST (UK) »
Hello .Is there a way I can search addresses in 1911 ? I believe my great gran was a domestic cook at an address in East Reach , Taunton at the time . I wondered maybe if I searched homes in East Reach I may come across her with possible mispelled surname ? Her name was Ellen Prout .
Any advice much appreciated
Regards
Alan

Hi yes you can at least do a basic search in the free indexes. If you put in Ellen as her first name and Taunton in the address you get over 1000 results. If you can narrow it down by a rough date of birth that will reduce your results page considerably. If she had a middle name, that will show up on the results page but I'd suggest this is a case initially where in search terms ' less is more'. We are not allowed to do lookups of the 1911 I'm afraid due to copyright but have a search and see if you can find a likely candidate. With a surname like that there will be plenty of chance of a misspell! Let us know how you get on.
Best wishes.

The address search function doesn't work on FindMyPast at the moment, it's a known problem and had priority for fixing

http://blog.findmypast.co.uk/2014/findmypast-weekly-update-5/

You could try searching here

http://search.findmypast.co.uk/search-world-Records/1911-census-for-england-and-wales

and put Taunton in the registration district and start typing "Taunt" in the parish box until you see the 4 possible locations and chose each one in turn to see if anything jumps out at you.

The birth places are listed which might help as well as the birth years.

I'm not seeing an Ellen Prout in Somerset (anywhere!) in 1911?

Where and when was she born?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Hello , thanks to all . Yes my Ellen was born Rewe 1879 . I have an Ancestry subscription but did not see anything . I wonder if she put domestic cook at East Reach , Taunton as her place of work ? She was usually living in workhouses  . Is there a search of Inmates at Taunton Workhouse I wonder ?
Regards
Alan
