Where's Thomas in 1871?
« on: Friday 20 June 14 12:37 BST (UK) »
I'm currently researching Thomas FOSTER (b. c.1849 in Elm nr Wisbech - d. 1931 in Lincoln) and have him on every census except the '71, when he would have been aged about 22, around the time he must have been making his way in the world. I believe that his parents were Thomas Foster, a farmer (b. c.1822 in Walsoken, Norfolk) and Susannah Batterham GREEVES, who were married in 1847. Can anyone place Thos jnr in 1871?

  • 1849 - baptised 24 May, Elm
  • 1851 census - Elm; born Elm
  • 1861 census - Friday Bridge, Elm; born Elm
  • 1871 - ??
  • 1876 - married Hannah Cass BASSETT in Lincoln
  • 1881 census - 31 Burton Road, Lincoln; occ. House painter; born Friday Bridge
  • 1884 (baptism of four of his children)  - 31 Burton Road, Lincoln; occ. Painter
  • 1891 census - 63 Burton Road, Lincoln; occ. Painter; born Wisbe[a]ch
  • 1901 census - 63 Burton Road, Lincoln; occ. House painter; born Wisbech
  • 1911 census - 63 Burton Road, Lincoln; occ. House painter; born Elm
  • 1931 - buried 11 Jun, St Nicholas, Lincoln

Many thanks for any light anyone can shed,

Paul

Edit: P.S. I also haven't yet been able to find his future wife, Hannah Cass Bassett, in 1871.

Hmm ... as he becomes a painter, I wonder if he did an apprenticeship? If so, he may be with whoever he was apprenticed too and recorded incorrectly on the census - maybe wrongly spelt surname or place of birth.

GILBY - Essex, Warwickshire and Cambridgeshire
OWENS - Yorkshire (West Riding) and Ireland
PUGH - Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Cheshire, and Nottinghamshire
RYLANDS - Liverpool and Ireland

That's a good idea; one I'll keep an eye out for.

There's an Annie Bassett the right age working as a servant in a school in Lincoln on 1871 - RG10, 3373, 82, 24.

Hannah does sometimes become Anna (and vice versa)

Thanks - that certainly looks promising for Hannah. (She appears as Anna on later records, so Annie would be no surprise). Mantle's school in Northgate was where the Lincoln Cathedral choristers were sent.

Many thanks.

There's a T J Foster, born Cambs Wisbeach, aged 25 (three years out), boarder in the home of Christopher Watson at 134 Southgate Road, St John At Hackney, London, in RG10/317/97/63.

His occupation seems to be given as Accountant; quite a way from House painter. But I can't see this T J Foster before or after the '71. I wonder if that's him?
