Early life of David Young 1796-C1849 a Surgeon from Cardross.
« on: Sunday 22 June 14 15:39 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to trace David YOUNG's early years. He was born in 1796 and married Jean Wright. They lived in Renton, Cardross until about 1828 when they moved to the Barony in Lanarkshire, where they lived at 4, Dale Street. He gave his occupation as Surgeon in the 1841 census. Their children were David, John, Margaret & James all born in Renton, and then Jean & William born in the Barony.
I have tried contacting the College of Surgeons in Glasgow, but they just ignored my e-mail.
I would be very grateful if anyone could help me fill in his early years and who his parents were.

Best regards,
Keith

Hi Keith

Not David's early years, but just checking that you have seen that there is a last will and testament entry for him on the database at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk showing as:

David YOUNG, 27/12/1849 - SURGEON IN BRIDGETON OF GLASGOW, SPOUSE OF JEAN MCKENZIE WRIGHT YOUNG. Last Will and testament. Glasgow Sheriff Court ref SC36/51/28    - 5 pages.

Looks to be a further entry for an 'I' (Inventory) 1 page.

The date above not normally indicates date of death.

To do with dates...doesn't matter at all in respect of what you are looking for but one daughter born as early as 1825 in the Glasgow area https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FM96-9D4

From the christening of the first born children in Cardross, have you viewed images of the christening to check whether any family names showed as sponsors/godparents?

When did Jean Wright die do you know? Have you made any headway on her birth and parents?

Monica

Added: Keith, sorry  :P Just seen your online tree and note you have the last W&T for David Young.

Glasgow Herald, Monday, July 23, 1849 shows a death notice for David. He died on 20 June at home from paralysis. Couldn't see that particular issue imaged here http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=GGgVawPscysC

Hi Monica,
thanks for those extra bits of information, I shall chase them up. I haven't done much research for a while into my wife's forbears and you have given me a bit of impetus to get going again!
Thanks again.

Hi,
just sent off an e-mail to the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons today and got a reply almost straight away  :D. The manager there told me she had looked through their archives, but couldn't find David there, and also she had checked the archives of Glasgow University without any luck there too.
Any new help would be most gratefully received!

Hi, a few bits.....

Death:
Jane McKenzie Young
widow of David Young-surgeon
died:3 Sept 1880
age:89 yrs
father:James Wright-ploughman (dec)
mother:Margaret Hamilton (dec)

children of James & Margaret(I could find);

Margaret 23 Jan 1774
James 6 June 1776
David 13 Dec 1778
John Kendrie 4 Dec 1781
Roberton 8 Oct 1786

James Wright & Margaret Hamilton married 1 January 1773 Airdrie,Lanark

children of David Young & Jean Wright:

John 15 February 1818 Cardross
Margaret 26 October 1818 Cardross
David 2 July 1820 Cardross
James 25 August 1822 Cardross
Janet 7 April 1825 Glasgow
Jane 22 Dec 1827 Airdrie
William 19 Sept 1830 Glasgow

If you go by naming patterns, there are 29 records for David Young born between 1750-1785 on Scotlandspeople with father's first name John.

I could not locate a marriage for David Young and Jean/Jane Wright between 1790-1820.

One thing I am wondering though is- I came cross a marriage & some childrens baptisms for James Wright & Mary McKenzie (although not Jean's) starting in Dunbarton & then some born in Perthshire. These occurred before James married Margaret and had children with her. I wonder if Jean/Jane's mom is Mary McKenzie but Margaret was the only mum she knew as her mother died when she was young? (no pun intended). Hope this helps,Kim

Hi again, forgot to say it in previous post. Jean Wright Young also has court documents in the wills section of Scotlands people as she died intestate. Kim
