William Frederick Morris - Dundalk
« on: Sunday 29 June 14 15:55 BST (UK) »
There is a soldier that died in WWI on the CWGC.

It is William Frederick Morris - died 30th July 1916.

His widow was Lilian Winifred Morris from Dundalk.

My uncle was born in Hammersmith, London but was brought up in Kent.

Everything ties in with this man being my uncle except I don't know who he married or what happened to him after 1906.

Can anybody find the marriage record to see who the parents were?.

My uncle was born Frederick William Austin Morris  in 1886, but his army service record calls will William Frederick Morris.

Thanks,

Darin.

This looks like a good possibility for his marriage.

I'm not finding a matching Lilian though

You would need to buy the cert to see the parents.

Hi

Thanks for that.

I'm not sure if that would be his wife.

His army service record from 1903-1906 states that he didn't rejoin in 1907.

There is a note on the last page to say:

This soldier was killed on 31st July 1915 at the Battle of the Somme and is buried in Quarry Cemetery, France.

It doesn't give his regiment or number at time of death.

The Somme was 1916.

Also, there is no  William Morris, or Frederick Morris dying on 31st July 1915 (or 1916 assuming the year is a typo).

The closest is William Frederick Morris dying on 30th July 1916, leaving a widow Lillian Winifred Morris of Dundalk.

Thanks,

Darin.

As it turns out, one absolutely vital piece of information not mentioned so far is that the CWGC record states "Lilian Winifred Morris, of 8 Ardee Terrace, Dundalk".

The 1911 Ireland census shows the following folk living there:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Louth/Dundalk_Urban_No__3/Ardee_Terrace/904797/

21 year old Elizabeth Gallagher ties in nicely with the marriage bride previously posted by annclare, it's very possible this is the future wife Lilian.

Edited to add:  Indications so far that this is an Elizabeth Gallagher born 1890 to parents Patrick Gallagher and wife Sarah Caldwell who married in Derry in 1865, FamilySearch and other sources have records that suggest this as a possibility.
