I am trying to track Australian information about Bartholomew Conelly, son of Catherine Burchell and her first husband Denis Conelly.
DENIS and CATHERINES children.
PETER JAMES CONNOLLY of Ballynatone
Baptised 6 Jan 1860 Castlehaven and Myross RC
MICHAEL CONOLLY
Baptised 12 Feb 1862 Castlehaven and Myross RC didn't come to Australia.
BARTHOLOMEW CONELLY
Born about 1864,No information about birth or Baptism. Information about his age is from the immigration passenger list.
MARY CONNELLY
Baptised 3 Nov 1867 Castlehaven and Myross RC
Catherine Conelly arrived in Australia on board the “Gresham” with Mary age 1, Bartholomew 3 and Peter age 6.
In 1893 Bartholomew married Rose Walsh #2501
they had two children that I know of
1894 Edmund Thomas Valentine Conelly
1897 Margeurite Philomena Conelly
in 1903 he was living in Brunswick with Rose, he was an Engine Fitter.
in 1905 Rose died in Footscray
in about 1930 he appears to have moved to Buninyong possibly retired but still describing himself as an Engine fitter in the electoral roll of 1931.
1942 is his last appearance in Buninyong still calling himself an engine fitter at 78.
Then there is nothing, I have checked at Buninyong and his death or burial doesn't seem to appear, though I could have missed an odd spelling of Conelly, nothing at Ballarat either. It would just be nice to know what happened to him.
The other question is what happened to his children, they are born, Mum dies and then absolutely nothing.
I think I will eventually find Bartholomew around Ballarat or Buninyong with a bit more leg work, but why did his kids just vanish. Did they go into an orphanage, get fostered by his brother or sister, I can't find any evidence for either.
Bartholomew was known as Batt to his wider family, my mum describes him as a bit of a mystery and says that he may have been in NSW for a time. That may have been after Rose died but there's no evidence for that.
The Irish end of his story is a subject for a post in the appropriate place eventually.
thanks, rusted
