Raws of Grougar
« on: Monday 07 July 14 15:19 BST (UK) »
I have been searching for Raws of Grougar.  In 1795 a birth shows that it was registered in Kilmarnock district but where?  Father was a farmer.   Thanks.

I grew up in the village of Crookedholm just outside Kilmarnock and there was a wee row of rural houses near there called Grougar. You can find it by driving straight up the main housing scheme road .past the old school.turn right and keep going for maybe 3 miles? Grougar is on this back road .Next town would be Galston I guess. Crookedholm folk will tell you more!

If you have a read at http://www.ayrshirehistory.org.uk/Bibliography/monos/amr1.htm it shows details of Grougar Row
Quote
18 houses, and is situated on the back road from Galston to Kilmarnock, about 1½ miles from Galston.

Thanks BonnieJean and Falkyrn.  I guess back in 1795 there may have been a small farm there but at least your description of locality certainly helps me to home in on Raws of Grougar.

Many thanks

The Scottish say Raw for row.   It's blocks of row houses.  I only know that cos my great grandparents lived in a Miners row, in Ayrshire, the "houses" are all joined together.

Further to the answers, there is an East Raws farm and a West Raws Farm in the area of Grougar. Next door farm to them is Grougar Mains
