Looking back over dates it would appear that Richard Senior was born 1850 and married 1868 - all within limits so far and then we can only presume the same of his wife Mary.

While there IS a big gap between marriage and children COULD this be accounted for by what now appears to be a military career of some sort.

As the children were born in the 1880's - Mary was still only in her 30's - so I'm not concerned by that !

Also, it's most likely that Richard died in service then and I'm not sure how good those records were kept in India at that time.

I would suggest our poster attaching this link to the Military Forum to see can he get any leads there !

Could Richard have gone to India with the military by himself and Mary only joined him in later years - this might explain the gap a bit better

Hi There,

I know this thread is old but my grandmother has sent me on the hunt for family history her maiden name being Cameron. Super interested in this thread because I have a hand written declaration which can confirm that Rickard Skelly (husband of Mary nee Reilly) enlisted on 3rd Dec 1864 for Her Majesty's 'Sommart' (<-- Sorry handwritting is not 100% clear there) until 1870. Then Volunteered in the 1st Essex Regiment in India in 1881. Richard did not die in service he retired in Victoria, Australia.

I'm looking into details of their Daughter Catherine Mary Skelly (who married John Cameron, my grandmothers grandfather) She was Born in India 1878/79 and died 25 July 1955 aged 77. She married John Cameron in WA and lived in the Gippsland Victoria Australia.

Super interested to know more about the three brothers sent as wards to the state and am chasing this up here in Melbourne Victoria AU. My Grandmother has me on the hunt for sisters, not brothers!
