Bendigo Historian - 1857 miner's right
« on: Saturday 12 July 14 14:52 BST (UK) »
Dear Members,

I would like to find if there is anyone or any group still available to discuss the people who lived in Bendigo from about 1850 onwards.

Even though I have sent emails etc., to various groups I have never had any replies. From 1855 onwards at least twenty five of my ancestors were born or died in the region. Many were miners and some held office in the area. Please see attached one item with regards to mining.

Kind regards
Steve

Is there anything specific you are looking to find out?

Presumably some people would be better documented than others.

Have you contacted local history societies in the area?

Dear Ruskie,

Many thanks.

For a moment there I thought you knew who to contact.

Is all I can say is...been there...done that.

Phoned them - no answer....emailed them - no answer.......written to them - no answer. Total waste of time so far.

Next time I am in Bendigo I will knock on a few doors.

Regards
Steve

Sorry to get your hopes up. I'm sure someone on here will be able to help you.

I'm also fairly sure that anyone who may be able to help, will want to know exactly what you are looking for. They will probably also want to know who you have already contacted, because there would be no point suggesting something you have already tried.

Just trying to get a little bit more information out of you.  :)

I take it you believe there is some information out there about your family which you are trying to track down?

Maybe also some names, dates, places etc might help others help you.  :)

PS. Fabulous document by the way. I take it you have the original?

The Bendigo Advertiser is digitised and online at Trove, I am not sure if the project is completed yet but its pretty comprehensive.
The Bendigo Library has research rooms with loads of resources.
There is a branch of the Australian Genealogical society in Bendigo.
There is a Family History Society.
There is an Historical Society.
Neighbouring towns have collections in their Historical societies.

You are fortunate to have that Miners Right, all my ancestors were Miners yet not one Miners Right survived.

Using the search facility of R'chat and browsing previous posts for steve albin gives us some indication of his specific name interests in Bendigo.

Hi Steve,

Firstly, nice that you have the Miner's Right, secondly, I have had good responses from a few family history groups in Victoria by phoning them first to make contact and then emailing afterwards with specifics.

Gerry

Hello Steve Albin,

I write from Melbourne Aust. not knowing if you are in Aust. or the U.K. Ireland maybe ? My first message just joined this site. I ask if you will give me permission to use your Miners Right in a chapter of a family history on my wife's side. It is very pertinent because its exactly the same document her GGGrandfather must have had in 1857/8 at the Bendigo goldfields, the date is about right and its a perfect example. This family history is a private book, not for profit project and for family members only. I would greatly appreciate your approval, please let me know. Best wishes, James T.

Not sure whether this helps - I have researched William Vazie Simons who was Mayor of Bendigo and involved in mining. Happy to pass on what I know.
