Identity bracelet
« on: Wednesday 16 July 14 09:24 BST (UK) »
Can anyone give me any information please on a silver bracelet, engraved as shown.

I received this yesterday from a cousin and it belonged to my grandmother. It is engraved with my grandmother's name and address and "QART 93/2" - my cousin understands it was a WW2 identity bracelet and other members of the family may have had 93/1, 93/3 etc.

This is not something I have come across before. Does anyone know anything further? Did all citizens have such a bracelet? Or just in this area (Harborne, Birmingham)? Or just this family even? My grandmother would have been 40 in 1939 so it isn't an evacuation ID.

If the bracelet is silver it would definitely not have been standard issue (far too expensive!)

I see that there is a Queen Alexandra's College in Harborne with a history going back to the 1840s (founded as the General Institution for the Blind)).  Could QA stand for Queen Alexandra?  If so, I haven't figured out what RT could stand for!  Did your grandmother do wartime work which could throw any light on QART?

All the best
Philip

I am sure there was a previous thread on RC regarding the WW2 Identity Cards scheme?

The reference QART 93/2 is the National Registration number. This later became the basis for NHS numbers!

QART is a code referring to the enumeration district (i.e.town, or area).
93 refers to the household - family group (or address?)
/2 is the second person within the group.

Thanks both. I agree the identity marks are no doubt unique to my grandmothers name, location and family position.

I think my surprise/interest comes from not having encountered such a thing before, I assumed only those on military service would have an id tag.
