John Thomas Skelly WW1
« on: Saturday 19 July 14 10:37 BST (UK) »
Hi all
While helping out on another topic re the name Skelly i came across a soldiers will on Irish National Archives
Wills and Testaments.
John Thomas Skelly,Corporal 17408 Royal Dublin Fusileers, K I A 9/9/1916 France.
Entered Theatre of War 19/12/15
His will seems to have been made out on 6/9/16 to
his sister Mrs Mary or Mgt O??Farrelly,No 5 M P D Corps quarter DET Bks,Cork.(no idea what this address is)
out of curiosity i looked on CWGC and could find no trace of him.
I then contacted Ken and Pam Linge of Thiepval Database Project to inform them of same and they duly replied that it was strange as a medal card existed for him.
But
This man appears on CWGC Thiepval Memorial
John Thomas Maloney,Corporal 17408,9 th ,Royal Dublin Fusileers,K I A 9/9/1916 age 47 born Dublin enlisted Cardiff.
Husband of Catherine Elliott formerly Maloney of 1A, Pwll Cwrn,Landore,Swansea.

I dont have access to any of these sites so dont know if a will exists in name of Maloney.

Any help sorting out if same man or two different individuals or any info on their background family etc.
Regards
Dathai.

his sister may have been married to an M.P (Detention Corps). as the address is the Detention Barracks Cork.
There's no MIC for John Thomas Maloney with that number so it looks like a mistake has been made somewhere.

Catherine Maloney married James Elliott 1923 St. Neot's Swansea.
Strange he made his will out to his sister.

I don't know if it's of any significance but there's a John Maloney b. 1876 Co. Cork Ireland in Wales in 1901.
Marriage for a Thomas Maloney to Catherine Burke in 1902 Swansea.
1911 there's a Thomas Maloney b.1876 Co. Cork Ireland & Catherine in Swansea + 4 little Maloney's.
1 more child in 1912.
Catherine was only 32 so I wonder if they split up.
Might not be him of course as his age is out 7 years.
Might be a transcription error & perhaps he was 42.
Changed his name & joined up to escape his wife perhaps.

Thanks Jim1
Just a little observation i noticed before which often leads to confusion.
Catherine Elliott formerly Maloney
Should it not be Catherine Maloney formerly Elliott.
I have seen this before where i knew wifes maiden name.

Sorry Jim the point i am trying to make is at what stage or date would the next of kin be added to their memorial if Catherine did get married in 1923 if his widow would she have been recorded in 1916 or when do they add next of kin.

No she was Catherine Maloney now she's Catherine Elliott after marrying James Elliott in 1923.
Meaning the information was gained after she married as the Memorial wasn't built until the late 20's/eary30's
Wives aren't on the Theipval Memorial or any memorial only name, rank, no. & Regt. of the soldier.
NOK were included in service docs. at attestation.
He would have been asked to put down wife, when married, names of children & when born.
They may have got the info about her 2nd. marriage from his sister.
They would have to have made contact to inform her of where he was commemorated.
The CWGC do hold some additional info on a lot of the men which is on their website.

Ah now i see, thank you Jim for that clarification explains a lot,i was wondering about lapse between his death and 1923 marriage for his wife, understood now.
So where do you think that leaves us with  John Thomas Skelly is he the same person or a different individual.
