Was this from the transcription? Have you considered buying some credits from Scotland's People and looking at the image yourself? And if you are unable to make sense of the place name, you can post it here for us all to take a stab at.  :)

What was the person in question's occupation? I was just looking at an old map of the area and noticed a Distillery.  ;D

It starts with a D and ends with a y and has a couple of lls in the middle.  ;D

I can't see anything else that looks promising ....

There is a Delalie - which looks like a farmstead and there's also an area called Bogs of Delalie. I am not sure of parish boundaries if Fettercairn is the parish but this is a way away from the town of Fettercairn.

No Delalie on a map of today but it was just west of Croftangry Wood, with Bogs of Delalie just north of Delalie.

Hi Ruskie,

Man of the house was a Farmer.

I haven't used SP as I'm only rummaging around at the moment  ::)

My gg grandfather David Hogg has the name "Morris" as a middle name which I have never been able to identify with anyone yet as I don't have a birth for his father or mother. His father was Scottish, mother English & by deduction, Morris is a Scottish name, so maybe his paternal grandmother was a "Morris"

I am just about to look at "Freecen" to see what it lists as the placename.

I am just looking for the name Morris in that area to see if there is a David in any of them as the name David is only held by my gg grandad & not been followed down the line. It isn't such a popular name either in terms so thought a bit of digging around is worth the effort for any clues, hopefully ??

Hi ,

FreeCen transcription has it as DILLAY.
Household addresses before it are Bogondollo , and after Balnakettle.

An 1880's map has a Delalie(hard to read) near Bogendollo and Balnakettle.

Ruskie, That sure would fit with the Farmer.

My David was a Joiner & his father James was a Draper. James died prior to 1855 which makes things a bit trickier :-(

Thanks Ev, will have a look here. Pity the census don't give more precise details for us noseyparkers. It's like Orienteering but fun !!! :-)

Sadly my ggg grandad died approx. 34 yrs old with only 2 kids, John & David

In case Delalie is correct, look at google maps and locate Thainston.

Delalie is up a long track which you can clearly see running NW of Thainston.

If you put the little man down on the road you can just about see the farm buildings at the end of the pathway. And yes, it is farmland - very beautiful.
