Peter and William Martin, miners, WestCalder, 1867-1868
« on: Tuesday 29 July 14 01:05 BST (UK) »
Peter(b.1839) and William(b.1843) Martin are brothers, their parents are William Martin and Jane Smith. They worked mines in West Calder until about. 1869. Then went to America. I can't find a family group on any of the 41, 51, and 61 Scotland Census. They were born in Bathgate. Anyone have any ideas. Also, in 1867 and 1868 respectfully they joined the Thistle Lodge # 270 in West Calder.

Hi, CaroleW

Death records in Utah provided the information and membership in the St. John's Lodge #8, Frisco, Beaver County Utah. The Lodge doesn't exist anymore, but the Grand Lodge of Utah had the membership records

Hmmm.

I notice that the IGI has no community indexed listings for children of William Martin and Jane Smith. There is one listing for Peter, giving his birthplace as Linlithgow, West Lothian. There are three listings for William
(1) William Martin, born 20 May 1843, Linlithgow, died 19 February 1902
(2) William Smith Martin, born 20 May 1843, Linlithgow, died 19 February 1902
(3) William Smith Martin, born 12 July 1843, Clarkston, Renfrewshire, died 19 February 1902
which just goes to demonstrate that you should only ever use the IGI as a finding aid, not as a reliable source!

When you say that you cannot find the family on any census, where have you looked? In particular, have you looked in www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, which is the only place you can get images of the original documents?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
