William Charles Neilson (1856) - where did he go?
« on: Thursday 31 July 14 16:21 BST (UK) »
Hi there

William Charles Neilson, born 15 Apr 1856 at 3 Abercromby Place, Edinburgh, second son of my Great Great Granduncle James Neilson and his wife Frederica Ann De Lisle disappears after the 1861 Census in Edinburgh.

Can anyone give me any pointers please?

Regards

Hi Chiad Fhear

Just a few questions.... :)

Do you have any of the family after 1861 or  in 1871?

Did his mother die 1859 Midlothian?
Did his sister Bessie (Elizabeth Murray Brown NEILSON) b 1855, die in 1865, Midlothian, age 10?
Do you know where his father is in 1871 (James NEILSON, Solicitor, b 1810 Fortingall, Perthshire) or had he died by then?
Where was the first son in 1861?

Cheers

I need to resurrect this - it's a real 'brick wall'

I found these notices in the Australian press:

"The Queenslander" Brisbane, Queensland : Saturday 19 March 1887
"Missing Friends, Messages, etc,
ARTHUR CUBITT, "THE ARCADE," KING-STREET, SYDNEY.
MISSING FRIENDS AND GENERAL INQUIRY AGENT.
Certificates Obtained of Births, Deaths, and Marriages.  Copies of Wills and other Deeds Obtained.
Strictly Private Inquiries ...
HEIRS WANTED. — If ROBERT DE LISLE NEILSON and WILLIAM NEILSON, sons of the late James Neilson, Solicitor, Edinburgh, Scotland, will communicate with MESSRS. GIBSON & STRATHERN, W.S., 12 Charlotte-street, Edinburgh, Scotland, they will hear of something to their advantage.
Any friends of the Messrs. Neilson are requested to communicate this advertisement to them"
[This notice appeared again in "The Queenslander" Brisbane, Queensland, on Saturday 26 March 1887, Saturday 2 April 1887, Saturday 9 April 1887]

"The Sydney Morning Herald" New South Wales : Friday 28 January 1887
"PERSONAL
WILLIAM CHARLES NEILSON, second son of the late James Neilson, solicitor, Edinburgh, last heard of in Auckland, New Zealand, by communicating with the undersigned will hear of something to his advantage.
LAURENCE and RICH, Solicitors, 35, Castlereagh-street, Sydney, N. S. W."
[/i]

I now know that Robert died in Sydney N.S.W. on 3 Aug 1918, but can anyone shed any light on William - after the last find I have for him in the 1861 Census?

Likewise Monica - James's results were accessed quite quickly through the Australian newspaper archives on TROVE. William is a mystery.

They're just 2 of the 42,480 others in my tree!

Appreciate you linking the posts together  ;)
