Machynlleth christening look-up; 1757.
« on: Friday 01 August 14 14:21 BST (UK) »
This is probably a bit of a long shot, but please, does anyone have access to copies of original parish records for Machynlleth?

According to Family Search, John Owen was baptized on 26th June 1757, parents Owen David and Margaret.  But Findmypast only has a transcript of this -- no sight of the original.  A pedigree I have access to, however, gives the date as 27th June 1757 -- one day later.  This is likely a transcription error; but with a name like John Owen in Wales, one perhaps cannot be too careful! ;D

I should be extremely grateful if anyone out there is in a position to do a look-up on a copy of the original and let me know which date is the correct one (unless we have TWO John Owens here, baptised on consecutive days?!) and also confirm that parents' names are correctly transcribed.

Many thanks.

Hi there

Sorry I haven't access to the original PRs, but freereg have transcribed the entry as:

Parish Church Machynlleth bapt 26 Jun 1757, parents Owen and Margaret Owen: Note patronymic name Owen David.

There are no other John Owens on freereg bap in Machynlleth in 1757

Thank you for that, Shirl100.  :)  That's certainly helpful and very interesting.
your confirmation of parents' names is extremely valuable -- thank you for that.  And also confirmation that there appears to be only one John Owen christened in Machynlleth that year.
So I really think it has to be 26th!

If you just search FindMyPast for 'John', no surname in 1757 at Machynlleth using the Powys Baptisms record set you can see the image

FWIW my transcription for the entry in June is:

John son of Owen David and Margeret his wife, Town  26
Middlesex: KING,  MUMFORD, COOK, ROUSE, GOODALL, BROWN
Oxford: MATTHEWS, MOSS
Kent: SPOONER, THOMAS, KILLICK, COLLINS
Cambs: PRIGG, LEACH
Hants: FOSTER
Montgomery: BREES
Surrey: REEVE

Again FWIW, looking at the format of the other entries, I'd have interpreted David as the surname

EDIT: Ah, I see that's how FindMyPast interpreted it too
Middlesex: KING,  MUMFORD, COOK, ROUSE, GOODALL, BROWN
Oxford: MATTHEWS, MOSS
Kent: SPOONER, THOMAS, KILLICK, COLLINS
Cambs: PRIGG, LEACH
Hants: FOSTER
Montgomery: BREES
Surrey: REEVE

Thank you, StevieSteve & MargP.

According to the pedigree, John is buried "at Llangendeirne Co: Carmarthen 4 September 1829" -- so not at Machynlleth, MargP; but thank you very much for your generous offer.  (How lovely to have a caravan at Machynlleth!  I have yet to visit, unfortunately, but long to do so.  Some of my ancestors appear to have hung out in this area over quite a long period).

StevieSteve, the pedigree names John's father as "Owen Jones otherwise Owen David Jones otherwise Owen David" -- I'm sure they all knew who they were at the time, but these Welsh names certainly are confusing for descendants at several generations remove to work out!  Thank you.

Hi Annie

The church yard is in walking distance from where I am, so if want any look ups just let me know, I also go to the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth, a few time a year, any excuse to go it is such a lovely place, so if there is anything you need from there just shout.
