Local knowlege please, Taunton area
« on: Sunday 03 August 14 17:36 BST (UK) »
In 1786 a relative signed a will stating him to be 'late of the city of Bath' and 'at this time living at WHOFORD near Taunton'.  The will was proved in London the same year.

I can find no place named Whoford and do not know if it was a house, hamlet or village.  I have no occupation for him, nor year of birth.

If anyone can help I shall be very grateful.

Ainslie

P.S.  Having used only a transcript of the will, I have now seen an online version.  The first letter may not be 'W' after all,but the '?hoford' looks clear enough.

Just a thought, - but could it be 'Wolford'? See:

There is a full gazetteer of Somerset place names at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/gazetteer/10somer311/10somer311gazA.htm clicking on the name takes you to a map of the place.

Given its original proximity to Taunton, which it is now incorporated within, I did wonder about Sherford?

Many thanks for all suggestions.  None seem to match the handwritten version 0f the will, which was transcribed for the indexing at Kew as 'Whoford'.
I found over 40 places in Somerset ending in 'ford', none seem to be the one written.
I am about to experiment with scanning an extract for posting here, so may be some time...

Does this help?  I highlighted Whoford? and I think a reference to a widow which may have a similar W

The National Archives Link to the Will clearly says WHOFORD. See:

Thank you for saving me a wrestle with the system.  That is a very useful image, showing the other 'w'.  The next letter is surely an 'h'.
Romilly
If TNA are correct with their transcription, and no placename of 'Whoford' is shown in the various listings for the county, could it mean that the word is the name of a house or estate rather than a village or hamlet?
