Hi Terry.
Just seen your post regarding Private Walter Combe.
I am currently researching the fallen from my local village, Ayton in Berwickshire.
Out of the 42 from the First World War , there was 5 from the Kings Own Scottish Borderers who were killed on the same day- 12th July 1915.
When I researched the date I found that it was Gallipoli and a horrendous loss of life for the regiment.
I noticed when I found your post that I have the same surname as Walter. Do you know where he lived?
Thanks.  Kenny Combe

Hi Kenny,

Walter was my grandmothers brother the family came from Hawick but the furthest back I have on this line were from 'Haddingtonshire' then Midlothian and finally 2 brothers went to Hawick in the mid 1850's.

Walter was also killed on the 12th July 1915.....such a waste.

I'm not too far away from you in Earlston. Perhaps there is a family connection.

Hi Terry.
Thanks for the information.
I have a second cousin in Canada. He has done extensive research into his family and has traced the roots back to Robert Combe from Haddingtonshire in 1793.
Perhaps we are distantly related.
Here is the link to his research which is very extensive.
My father, James Combe was born in Berwick in 1920.
