Banchory ternan
« on: Tuesday 05 August 14 13:56 BST (UK) »
On the 1861 census for Banchory Ternan, there is a dwelling house "Tapenroot" which is quite close to Lightwood, but it doesn't appear to be on any old maps.  Can anyone shed some light on this please.

I've been unable to find any mention of this house at all. Did the name come from an actual census or a transcript?

Tapenroot is in the 1861 census records. after Drumfennie, and  prior to Lightwood and the School house at Lightwood. There is a George Laing, Agric lab and family living there.

Have you checked the original on Scotland's People rather than the transcript on a pay site? Some of the interpretations of the Scottish censuses on pay sites leave a lot to be desired ...

Can you give us some clues as to the location of Drumfennie and Lightwood please?
No luck finding them on Google maps.

I have a copy of the 1861 census in front of me, which I had printed out at the Aberdeen and North East Scotland family history shop. This is from the original census on film.

The enumerator states "Commencing at Craigton, going east by Hattonburn and along the Skene of Turnpike to Mickleburn, south by (looks like ) Burgham and Mirebird, south west by Bucklebog, west by Mintlets, Bush,Drumfennie, north by Lightwood return again to Craigton.  I may not have the correct spelling for some of the places.

I did contact the Factor of the Burnett Estate, who told me their records dating that far back are with the Special Library at Aberdeen University Archives, so I have asked them to have a look for me, so that I can perhaps pinpoint exactly where my Reid family were living.

Ruskie, you'll find Lightwood here, above where it says Banchory Ternan.

It's listed in OS name Books along with most of the names mentioned, but no sign of Tapenroot, which is why I wondered if it was a wrong transcription. I can't even see anything it might be.

I've looked at maps, National Archives cat., Scotlandsplaces, newspaper archives, but can find nothing.

If Tapenroot is after Drumfennie and before Lightwood on the enumerator's round, then I think it must be the un-named building marked approximately half-way between those two.
