John Marshall Born Maldon, Essex
« on: Monday 11 August 14 16:00 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find details of my great grandfather, John Marshall, before he married my great grandmother. Here's what I already know...

He was born around 1859/1860 (he was 52 on the 1911 census, 41 in 1901 and 31 in 1891), in Maldon Essex (according to the census). I can't find any John Marshalls born in Maldon or the surrounding area.

In 1883 he married Jane Garrard (though spelt Jarrard on the marriage listing) in Caernarfon (Carnarvon). Jane was from Amlwch on Anglesey and was born in 1863.

In 1891 and 1901 they lived in Caernarfon and he worked as a sailor. By 1911 the family had moved to Holyhead, Angelsey, he was still a sailor now working for LNWR (presumably on the boats sailing between Holyhead and Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire).
John and Jane had at least 9 children - Winifred Mary (aka Gwen), William John, Uriah, Harriet Elizabeth, George, Catherine Garrard, Joseph, Maud and Jane (in 1911 William and Uriah also worked as sailors for LNWR).

After 1911 I lose him. I'm assuming (possibly a daft thing to do) that he stayed in Holyhead, because my grandmother married there in 1920 and still lived there when my father was born.

Any pointers anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

There's a John Marshall born 4th quarter 1859 in Chelmsford district?
Can't find him on 1871 or 1861 census.

I haven't got his marriage certificate yet  :-[

Thanks, I'll take a look at him.

All the John Marshall's I've found that could be him were born miles away from Maldon, so I assume he maybe grew up there but was born elsewhere in Essex (or the surrounding counties). But then he isn't on the census neither. I'll send for the marriage certificate (I have to get his daughters as well, because her husband's name is almost as common as Smith!).

P.s. If you decide to get the certificates, go straight to the GRO site, as it's cheaper (about £10). You have to wait about three weeks for it to arrive or you can pay more, if you want it quickly.

His daughter? She was called Catherine Garrard (often spelt Jarrard) Marshall, and was born in Caernarfon in 1900. She married John Williams in Holyhead, Anglesey in 1920. I'm 99% certain John was from Holyhead, but John Williams is a very very common name, especially on Anglesey. So hopefully his and Catherine's marriage certificate will help.

My great great grandmother is a Harvey ... Loads of them in Essex too ... Not as bad as Williams or jones in wales, I'm guessing!  ;)

Hi SharonAnne,

This is probably going to sound very out of the blue but...I think we're related!!

My great-great-grandfather is also John Marshall. My great Grandfather is Joseph Marshall (John Marshall's son), and he had a daughter who was my Grandmother.

I would love to get in touch with you and try and help with the family tree, if you're interested?

Hope to hear from you soon!
Hannah
