Chettle Worcestershire ?
« on: Wednesday 13 August 14 09:58 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I wonder if anyone has any suggestions please regarding 'Chettle'.
My 2xGt. Granduncle Thomas Knowles was baptised 1881 in Knighton on Teme and in various census taken in Brierley Hill where he was a butcher he has given his birth place as Tenbury ( Wells ), Lindridge, and Knighton on Teme ( 1881 ) . This I understand as they are all close to each other.
However on 1891 his last, he gives what looks like Worcs. Chettle which as far as I know is in Dorset and would not by any streach of the imagination be his birth place.
Does anybody know of a Chettle or similar named area in the Knighton / Lindridge area of Worcestershire?
regards
robsdad.

Hi There

Thats a puzzle so the best I can do is send you the contiguous parishes

the parishes contiguous to Knighton are Rous Lench, Abberton, Flyford Flavell, North Piddle, Grafton Flyford, Hanbury, Dormston, Inkberrow.

the parishes contiguous to Lindridge are Pensax, Stockton on Teme, Orleton, Eastham, Knighton-on-Teme.

I wonder if he was from North or wyre Piddle as Chettle may have been how the enumerator heard the place name - I know this is clutching at straws but its the best I can do for Worcestershire

All the very best

I wondered if it could be a version of Clee Hill to the north. The first letters could be Clee instead of Che??

Hi Phil & Kay,
Thanks for parishes Phil but I think Kay is about as near to putting her finger on it as anyone can be.
Yes Kay Clee Hill is about 4 miles from the other four 'birth places' he mentions and his parents did seen to circulate in that immeadiate area.
So many thanks for your suggestion and I notice the double t written a few lines below our entry has a quite distinct and heavy crossing to it unlike the 'Chettle' ones.
Thanks again,
regards
robsdad.

Hi There

Im enclined to agree with it being Clee Hills as when you look at it again it does look like Clee & its not very far away & whoever put the county on the census return may not have even known which county to enter
