Jane Shaw born circa 1777 "Wath"/Appleby
« on: Saturday 16 August 14 06:46 BST (UK) »
Looking for a possible baptism or any other clues as to Jane Shaw's origins.

There's a bit of background on this previous thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=384825.0

She was married twice in London - firstly to John Oliver in 1798, and then to William Folder in 1812.

On the 1851 census she is 73 and born "Westmorland Appleby".

On the 1861 census she is 83 and born "Westmorland Wath" (see image below and also http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=193007 )

She was aged 88 when she died in 1865 so the ages are all consistent and point to a birth year circa 1777.

The second husband William Folder and his siblings were all baptised at Crosby Garrett and I believe they were from Little Musgrave.

Hi Shaun J,

I have looked at the 1861 Census for Jane Folder and I believe that she was born 'Westmorland North' and not 'Wath'

The reasons for this is that the first letter after Westmorland I believe to be an 'N' not a 'W'
If you look at the entry 2 underneath then it says Amy Mould is from Sussex Worth. The N in your Janes is not like the W in Worth.

Another one further down says Anna M Wilding born Germany 'Nationalised subject'. The 'N' of Nationalised looks like the 'N' of North in Janes entry.

If she was born in Appleby, which is in North Westmorland then there are two C/E churches there. St Lawrence and St. Michael and they both had fairly large parishes with a number of outlying villages.
I don't know about any non-conformist Churches but the area was rife with Quakers and Methodists.

Hi Judy

Thanks for taking a look at this.

John Oliver and Jane Shaw had one son that I am certain of. His name was William, born in March 1802 and baptised at Christ Church Lambeth . The register of that church also shows a Thomas Oliver, son of John and Jane Oliver, baptised in July 1800. I have found no firm evidence that this is the same family but it seems very likely.

I have been looking through this web site to see if there were any likely Wills that may belong to her father.
http://www.archiveweb.cumbria.gov.uk/CalmView/TreeBrowse.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&field=RefNo&key=PROB

1790      W319 - Will of Samuel Shaw, yeoman, of Ing Ends, Mallerstang, Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland
1795    W451 - Will of William Shaw, yeoman, of Aisgill, Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland
1797 A(36) - Administration of Richard Shaw, yeoman, of Mallerstang, Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland

These are from 1778 to 1804 so not many Shaws seemed to make wills!!

If William was indeed her second son then there is a good chance that it was her father's name, so the  Aisgill family is of interest.

The North of the Sands website has this MI - could be descendants of that William :

"Ravenstonedale (S). In memory of William Shaw (Yeoman) of Aisgill, Mallerstang, who died at Tarn-house in this Parish October 29th 1844 aged 57. (Sons and Daus.) William died March 17th 1848 aged 21. Jane died March 21st 1848 aged 5. James died March 26th 1848 aged 13. Elizabeth died April 2nd 1848 aged 10. Eleanor died May 20th 1848 aged 17. Elizabeth died an Infant in 1834. John died December 25th 1858 aged 39. And of Eleanor wife of the above-named William Shaw, Yeoman, who died October 20th 1882 aged 86."

Worth pursuing. That is what I thought about the name 'William' too.

This is not a comprehensive list of Wills/Administrations as I just quickly looked through. Worth re-looking as I am sure I saw another for a Jane Shaw but for some reason did not copy it - maybe out of the area - but again may be worth ordering if you are getting any sent from the archives.

There are some Shaw's on this which is the 1829 Directory of Ravenstonedale.
http://edenlinks.rootsweb.ancestry.com/1gp/EASTWARD/RAVENSDALE/RAVENSDALE_HISTORY.HTM

It may all be a 'Red Herring' but I find researching every little lead sometimes brings in a clue.

Good Luck. Keep us in touch as to what you have found.
Judy
A quick modification -
There was a big Quaker congregation around Ravenstonedale. Wonder if they were Quakers?
