Talgarth coat of arms
« on: Saturday 16 August 14 10:57 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help with this please?  Here in Talgarth we are trying to find out whether or not the town (it is little more than a village really) has a coat of arms.  For some years it has used the general coat of arms for Brecknockshire but it is thought the town might have its own coat of arms.  If that's the case I'm wondering how we might locate them.   Anyone got any bright ideas?

Kind regards

I have checked and I don't think Talgarth has its own unique coat of arms

However, I would recommend a visit to the local library or contact a history society to find out more

Thank you for your response, sirsimon.  Interestingly our town mayor has found an image of a Carltonware trinket depicting what purports to be the coat of arms of Talgarth, but I am wondering if this might just be fanciful as it was no doubt manufactured for the tourist trade at some point in the early twentieth century.

Kind regards

A DISPLAY of HERAUDRY (sic) of the particular Coat Armours now in use in the Six Counties of North Wales and several others Elsewhere; with the Names of the Families, whereby any man knowing from what Family he is Descended, may know his particular Arms
Author John Reynolds of Oswestry Antiquarian - published Chester 1739

A display of Heraldry, collected out of several Authentick Authors

"Brochwel Ysgithrog*, Prince of Powys, Earl of Chester, Baron of Denbigh and Lord of Salop, anno 617, he bore for his coat armour Sable three Naggs Heads, Erased Argent. There are descendants from Brochwel Tysgithrog* as followeth: Blaynwys, of Tregynon; Lloyds, of Leighton; of Talgarth; of Garvawr; of Maes Mawr; of Sylvean; of Glanhavon; of Castellmoch; of Marington; of Llandyfer;......."

(*Gives both Ysgithrog and Tysgithrog)

Question - is this "your" Talgarth?

It's available on Google Books, but there is no "e.version" available on line.

Thank you very much, hanes teulu and YT.

There is another Talgarth in North Wales but I am thinking that 'Ysgithrog' might well be today's Scethrog, which is between Talgarth and Abergavenny.

Thanks both for your interest.
Kind regards

The extract I quoted mentioned Lloyds of Talgarth and Leighton. There's a Leighton near Welshpool and a Talgarth Manor at Trefeglwys, near Llanidloes.

Also found a 1706 reference to an Esquire "Edward Lloyd of Talgarth" in the County of Montgomeryshire.

The one Talgarth I've excluded with confidence is the one in Yorkshire!!
