Sorry this is all the details I have. The headstone is next to a family member at Wilton Cemetery  Hawick.
At that time 1838, Wilton and Hawick were two separate parishes so it is possible that the person was from Wilton.
I have been unable to establish anything regarding the person at the Hawick Heritage centre.

FamilySearch has a baptism for a Mary Ann Hawick born 25 May 1820 at Melrose, daughter of Thomas Murray and Ann Mercer. It's the only baptism on there for that name in the right time frame. Melrose is rather north of Hawick, but not all that far away, especially if the father was a farm servant who moved around.

However, if you look at the 1841 census there are quite a lot of families in Hawick with the surname Murray.
AYRSHIRE - Strachan, McCrae, Haddow, Haggerty, Neilson, Alexander
ABERDEENSHIRE (Cruden and Longside) - Fraser, Hay, Logan, Hutcheon or Hutchison, Sangster
YORKSHIRE (Worsbrough) - Green, Oxley, Firth, Cox, Rock
YORKSHIRE (Royston and Carlton) - Senior, Simpson, Roydhouse, Hattersley

That makes her a lot easier to find! The 1871 census has Mary Ann Murray age 9, daughter of Gideon and Elizabeth Murray, at 5 O'Connel Street, Hawick. Her mother was Elizabeth and there are three younger children at home. Gideon Murray was a woollen power loom weaver. Gideon is in the 1881 and 1819 census, still in Hawick.

Thank you. My Gideon Murray was listed as a Woolen Powerloom Tuner in 1878. probably advanced his learning of the trade. It would be interesting to find out which tweed manufacturer he worked for.  I will check the two censuses you have given.  :)

Actually, that's 1881 and 1891. Fingers got confused! Good luck. It's fascinating tracing unusual leads.
