Immigration from Ireland to England in 1870's
« on: Wednesday 20 August 14 20:46 BST (UK) »
How would I go about finding information an an ancestor who immigrated to England from Ireland during this time period? I only have a general idea of the date, between 1875 and 1881. He may have been a coal miner looking for work. He probably sailed from Belfast to Newcastle. I just need some ideas on how to get started.

thanks,
-Joe

Hi,

Unfortunately there are no passenger lists from Ireland to England. Have you found your ancestor on the 1881 UK Census ?

Was he alive in 1911 and if so have you found him in the census? We aren't allowed to do lookups for that one but it very often listed a more exact place of birth than 'Ireland.'
There weren't that many coal miners in Ireland but men from here often went to other parts of the U.K. and did whatever work they could find to support themselves and there families.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

This would have been migration not immigration it was like going from Scotland or Wales to England. He wasn't a foreigner.

There were Irish coalminers moving to Lanarkshire in the 19th century, I believe the Irish government eventually nationalised what was left of that industry.
Irish, English & Bohemian glassworkers also were attracted to Glasgow, which enjoyed a boom in glass production, leading to skills shortages and as the glass industry in Ireland lost its advantaged position re' duties.
Chasing bucks was the answer, as ever was! :)
