Could anyone help me find Michael Meagher/Maher's birth?
« on: Thursday 21 August 14 20:37 BST (UK) »
Referencing my other Meagher/Maher post on this forum - http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=691922.0

This is made slightly difficult by Michael's age varying - his death registration in 1951 gives his age as 75, which would give him a birth in 1876, at his marriage in 1907 he's claiming to be 30, which more or less matches, but on the 1911 Irish census he's 43, which puts the birth year back to 1868.

I've not managed to find him on the 1901 census.  I've tried all Ireland searches for Michael Meagher/Maher, but none of them seem to quite "fit".

On his marriage certificate his father is given as John Maher, a labourer.  He married in Taghmon, Parsonstown.  I thought I had found a candidate with an 1870 birth in Parsonstown, but this doesn't seem to be the County Westmeath Parsonstown.

I have obtained a marriage certificate for a John Maher and this does seem to be in the Westmeath Parsonstown.

So, if anyone would like a challenge, can they find Michael's birth or baptism, or, for a real challenge, in the 1901 Irish census?

Who was Michael's best man ?

Who were the sponsors to Michael's children ?

This is a total long shot but there was a couple called John Maher & Rose Gilligan having children in Westmeath at the same time that Michael was born.

Given that Michael called one of his daughters Rose I thought it might boost this idea.

Anyway, this appears to be Rose in 1901 !

So, in 1873 John & Rose had a son called Michael and he was baptised in Mullingar.

A long shot I know . . .

I just had a horrible thought !

You know the way on the marriage cert Michael's wife's father was put down as Michael YET it should have said John.

. . . and you have said that beside Michael's father is the name John.

HUM

I'm wondering MIGHT the father's names have just been mixed up and in fact Michael's father was actually called MICHAEL.

This mix up has happened MANY times before !

Right then, I'm back!

Michael's place of residence at the time of his marriage to Mary was just given as Mullingar.  The marriage took place in the Roman Catholic chapel of Taghmon.

No idea who the best man might have been, but we did establish on the other thread that witnesses were Mary's brother and her stepsister.

Oh dear, I don't even want to think about name mix ups - this is difficult enough as it is!

The baptism record transcripts I have found for the first two children don't show who the sponsors are.
