Main Street, Mill of Haldane
« on: Friday 22 August 14 22:36 BST (UK) »
My Dad lived in a red sandstone tenement at 5 Main Street, Mill of Haldane, Balloch/Jamestown/Alexandria. I can remember the building but it was demolished possibly in the 1970's and there is only a grassed area where the building once stood. As far as I can remember it was at the end of Drymen road across from Haldane Terrace when there once was a smiddy. I would love to see a photo of the old building and wondered if anyone can help. Thank you.

Hi House 2000,
I think that Haldane Terrace may originally have referred to the name of the tenement located on Main Street, Haldane, and that when the A814 was rerouted to bypass Balloch, the short section of road that exists today was renamed "Haldane Terrace".  The original layout of the area can be seen on the attached OS plan (http://maps.nls.uk/view/82874184), and the existing buildings in Streetview.

I've attached a photo of the area where my Dad lived. The red sandstone building once stood on the grassed area on the left side of the photo. I think the address was 5 Main Street, Mill of Haldane. Does anyone have a photo of the building? Thank you.

Here's a photo of my fathers family who ran the Old Smiddy.

Great photo Alan! My Dad lived across the road from the smiddy and then when he left school he moved just along the road to Ledrishbeg farm where he worked. I'm sure he would've been a frequent visitor to the smiddy.

This photo I had for a few years and I seen your post, I thought it would be of interest. I stay in what was the old nursery
