Any Welsh speakers around?
« on: Saturday 23 August 14 20:42 BST (UK) »
Please, can you tell me what "Goreu Glewder Galondid" means?   ???  (um, I assume it's Welsh?!  I know the 'w' would dis-bar it from being Classical Latin).  It's a motto on a coat of arms (belonging to  a gentleman of Welsh extraction).

Thank you. :)

Goreu is the best.
Glewder is courage
Galondid is encouragement

Many thanks, both of you -- your help is much appreciated. :)

Deidre784, I couldn't persuade google translate to work at all, so you're ahead of me there -- at least you got something out of it!

Thanks again.

After googling the phrase a coat of arms showed up. Looking at the coat of arms I suggest that the phrase should be read left, right, centre. Goreu Galondid Glynder = The best encouragement is courage. It doesn't quite have the same alliterative ring as it does in the language of heaven.

Thank you, Chwiliwr! :). Never occurred to me that the way the words were laid out (on a coat of arms, as you spotted) might be relevant; but the way you read it (having actually had sight of it in the original) certainly makes more pleasing sense.

I am very grateful to you.
