Thanks Phil; I'm guessing that your Baskerville house was named after this guy?

There are 80+ miles between Wolverley/Kidderminster and Stadhampton Oxon so no obvious connection atm... I'm guessing that if I can get back a generation or two I'm going to find a Baskerville.

Revisiting some of my old, open RC posts to see if I can move any of them on a bit.

One thing I hadn't noticed about "Baskerville" was how rare the name is/was as a forename.

There are 162 birth registrations on FreeBMD with Baskerville as a middle name.

But:

There are only 2 birth registrations in total with Baskerville as a first name:

  • One is Baskerville Simms Bowden's son of the same name (1887-1946);
  • The other is Baskerville Simms AUSTIN who I believe is B. S. Bowden's nephew (1902-1908)

Who know it was effectively a unique forename? Only three people have had it in England/Wales, and the younger two were named after the first.

Still no sign of a birth or baptism for the elder B. S. Bowden (abt 1852-1932).

For the record there are also 2 birth registrations for "Baskervyle"; there might be other spellings I haven't thought of.

Baskerville Simms Bowden's baptism is in the new Oxfordshire FHS "Oxfordshire, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1915" collection on Ancestry.

Baptised 9 Apr 1854, Stadhampton, parents James and Eliza.

Hi,
Regarding a birth registration there is this 'Births Dec 1853 BOWDEN Male   Thame 3a   441' courtesy of FreeBMD.
Right sort of area, right sort of time.

Thank you Ray - I hadn't spotted that one, that's a good possibility.
