John Dowrick and Matilda "Tillie" (Reid) Dowrick, Dunkalk
« on: Wednesday 27 August 14 00:20 BST (UK) »
Hello.  Thank you for reading my message.  Trying to find information about John and Matilda "Tillie" (Reid) Dowrick who lived in Dunkalk.  Do not know where John Dowrick originated, but Tillie was the daughter of Henry and Eliza Jane (McMahon) Reid of Crobane.  Tillie's father, Henry, died in 1895 in Crobane.  Tillie had eight siblings: David, Joseph, Robert "Bob", Eliza/Eliza Jane, Mary Ann, Margaret, James, and Sarah.

Know nothing about Tillie's husband John Dowrick, sorry to say.  Just his last name.

Would like to know if there is any more information available; and perhaps if there are living descendants.

Thank you.

GRONI online has a civil marriage registered in Newry and Mourne for John Dowrick (whose father was also John) and Matilda Reid (father Henry) on 8 May 1917, £2 will give you the full record including a digitised image:

https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk/

The church marriage was in Newry Methodist.

Tempting though it is to assume that these folk might be related:

... or these folk:

... I have nothing else to tie them in for the moment, so only just for noting until you can rule in or out.

It's not that common a name in Ireland, so I put 'Dowrick' & 'Ireland' into the search boxes on www.familysearch.org and there are quite a few entries in Wicklow, Dublin South, etc.

PRONI Will Extracts do have this (only Dowrick result)- "Dowrick Matilda of Crobane Newry county Down widow died 17 October 1956 Probate Belfast 18 December to James Reid farmer and reverend William Miller minister of first presbyterian (non-subscribing) church. Effects £641 12s. 1d."

Thank you so much gaffy and aghadowey.  The civil marriage registration must be correct.  Will get a copy.  It fits with her father's name and their location at the time.

They had no children, so the will extracts make sense that it would go to her brother and the church.

The Will Extract shows that her brother & the minister were granted probate but not how her estate was divided.
