Richard Kelly - 1853 Carlow
« on: Saturday 30 August 14 08:06 BST (UK) »
My 3 x great grandfather Richard Kelly married Susan Walker on the 12th November 1853 in Carlow before they came to Australia in 1855.  At his marriage Richard was a Land Steward at Raheendoran (I'm unsure if that is spelt right), does anyone know if there was a large estate there that he may have worked on?  Also I'm told that a Land Steward looked after the holdings while the owner was away????

Dee (Ballarat, Australia).

That's the correct spelling.
Looking at Griffith's Valuation Ratheendoran has a  Horace Rochrfort who has land in fee and appears to be landlord to everyone else, I'm using ipad so can't see the original book, this chap might be his employer.

The two nearest estates to Raheendoran were Alexanders of Milford(their land is around the townsland of Raheendoran and back to Milford) and Rochforths of Clogrennan.http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Carlow/Clogrennane/

Alexanders are still there but Clogrennan castle is long a ruin.
To be honest Alexanders look a better bet as the present houses in Raheen are adjoining their fields.
No Kellys in Raheendoran townsland in 1901;

Hi Noland01,
Thank as well for the reply, would my next move be the Griffiths Valuations??  I would think that if Richard Kelly was a "Land Steward" as he said on his marriage certificate, that he would be listed with the land owners?
I'm very new to the Irish side  :-\

Afraid no Kelly listed in Griffiths for that particular townsland (1852)

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&familyname=&firstname=&offset=0&countyname=&parishname=&parishname&unionname=&baronyname=&totalrow.
Griffiths just lists landowners(landlords) and their tenants(farmers and cottagers).

If for example he was living in a house rented or owned by someone else then he would not be listed.Searched also for a Richard Kelly on Griffiths but no likely ones among the 16 listed for Carlow.

Couple of Kellys (James Patrick and Patrick Jnr.) listed as tenants of Alexanders in Tomard townsland( which is about a mile or so from Raheendoran) but thats just guesswork.
No Kellys listed with Rochfort as landlord

Newspapers for the area might be worth checking out. If there was a court case of say poachers or similar on the estate he may have been called as a witness. http://www.irishnewsarchive.com
You can get a 24 hour sub for a quite reasonable price.
