Mystery: early life of Caroline Whiting, b c1812, Limehouse.
« on: Saturday 30 August 14 09:33 BST (UK) »
I'm tracing family ancestors, but can find no documentation regarding my Great-Great Grandmother, Caroline Whiting, prior to her marriage on 14th August, 1836 to Edwin Frederick Chesterman at All Saints, Poplar. Census records state that she was born in 1812 at Limehouse, but I cannot trace her parentage. I know that Limehouse was known as an area of settlement for immigrants, although Whiting sounds particularly English to me. If anyone is able to enlighten me I would be most grateful.

If you have her marriage records who are the witnesses?, it might be a clue, unfortunately you are a few months off showing father on a marriage cert

Witness names look like Wm Pinder and Hannah Pinder.

Caroline was a spinster so at least we know that Whiting was her birth name  :)

This is a long shot but caught my eye nevertheless.

There is a baptism for a Caroline" daur of Amelia Whiting by John Stanford" 8th Sept 1816.

Trouble is it is in Christ Church Southwark "Surry" so area is wrong as far as we know, but she may have been baptised as a 4 year old.  :-\

The same day a Charles was also baptised (same parent's details).

Abode was Brunswick St and father was a Shipwright.

It might be worth following this family to see if they had further children - perhaps they moved to Limehouse when the children were young and Caroline believed she were born there? :-\

As I said, not such a good fit, but maybe worth a closer look at if you are unable to find your Caroline elsewhere.

Many thanks to those who have been kind enough to help - I really value your efforts.

To answer collectively the points raised...

Louisa Maud: As yet I haven't managed to find a marriage record, but her death seems to have been 5th March 1897 in Woolwich Dockyard, Kent.

Milliepede: Thanks for the Pinder witness names!

Ruskie: On my journey I've discovered that it's always worth trying long-shots. This one looks particularly promising, so I'll certainly pursue it.

So, a little light along the way; sincere thanks, once again.
