Parish of Edentariff near Belturbet
« on: Saturday 30 August 14 18:40 BST (UK) »
Hi all, Have got the attestation papers for John Mccall for the Crimea in 1854. He puts down Parish Edentariff, Belturbet, Cavan for his birthplace. I have only found a mention of Edentariff in a piece written about a journey around Lough Erne describing it as being a few miles from Belturbet. Have not found it on any old map have looked back to 1830 and no sign of it. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.

There's an Edenterriff townland (Annagh civil parish). See http://www.thecore.com/seanruad/ to find townlands in Ireland.

Thanks to both of you for finding it for me. Obviously using the wrong map. What is the definition of a townland? Is it a town or a larger area? Thanks.

A townland is the most basic, and important, unit of land in Ireland. If you are doing any research in Ireland this will be the most precise location you might get for a person (except in cities or larger towns).

Have a look at these topics-

Haven't tried this myself but you might want to have a look-

Edenterriff is 116 acres in size. In the 1901 census there were two houses there (both farms), with a total of 9 inhabitants:
