Sidney Thomas Riley -Co Kildare and Co Cork
« on: Monday 01 September 14 09:21 BST (UK) »
:) Sidney Thomas Riley  to my knowledge was born in Curragh Camp County Kildare
on 16th November 1905.
He later enlisted in Royal Norfolk Regiment in 1921.

His father Thomas Henry Riley was stationed there at the time . He was born in 1880 Manchester, Lancs.
My understanding is by 1911 Sidney and his family were living County Cork.

Would there be any information available about this family? Apparently he is listed as a RC which is a surprise. Would he have been baptized at Camp Curragh perhaps?
What was this particular army camp? Could anyone help me please?

Will also try for any connection in Manchester.

Cheers and thanks in anticipation.Hyjean

The family are in Co. Cork in 1911-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Bandon_Town/Watergate_Street/373197

Since Thomas Riley is listed as Roman Catholic it's not surprising that the 2 children were also. More surprising is the notation that mother Florence had 3 children (all living) so looks like there's another child somewhere.

If you google 'curragh camp' you'll find lots to read.

Sydney's birth certificate would list his father's occupation & mother's maiden name as well as an exact place of birth.

Thomas Henry RILEY's army record is available online on a paid site

He enlisted in 1896 aged 18 and stated he was Church of England
from St. Augustine's Parish, Lancs.
His elder brother James was then his next of kin

He married Florence Gertrude BOX on April 13 1903 in Colchester
This is re-recorded as February 13th 1905 in Naas (the district for the Curragh Camp)
This was done most likely if the original marriage had occurred without permission or the record could not be located

He is listed as having had four children
Ella Alberta May RILEY b. Jul 29 1904 bap. Aug 21 1904 The Curragh
       * Ella is listed on the 1911 Census with her Grandparents John and Emily BOX in Ipswich

Sidney Thomas RILEY b. Nov 16 1905 bap. Dec 10 1905 The Curragh

3  Eileen Emily Elizabeth b. Jul 09 1907 bap. Aug 25 1907
       * Army record states she was born and baptised in Dublin but she is on 1911 as born in UK
However, there is a matching Civil UK Record in Ipswich, Suffolk Q3 Vol 4a Pg 1007

4  Eric James b. Jul 05 1911 bap. Sept 03 1911 Devonport

Ella and Sidney were baptised by a person named Smithwick
Ella's looks as if the initials are FF
but Sidney's looks more like TSS

edited to add:
Link to 1901 Census of those named Smithwick in Kildare
There is a CoI clergyman and his son (a Divinity Student) that matches the initials given
implying the baptisms were CoI
The son Frederick is listed in 1911 as attached to HM Forces as a CoI clergyman

There has always been a church attached to the Curragh Camp which is still in use by the Irish Defence Forces

Link to interesting sites on the Curragh

The military museum may be able to tell you what demonination Rev. Smithwick was to clarify things for you

Do you know when Thomas Henry died?
He may have converted to Catholicism during his life and where he is buried may help shed light on his demonization.

:) Thanks so much Aghdowey and My Luck for your information.
My friend wanted to know if Sidney was baptised RC as he was an Anglican later. A chaplain could have been RC or C of E I expect. If listed as RC it would seem so.
I will look into this info later today.I am in Australia so have to dash just now but wanted to say thank so far. Cheers, Hyjean
