6th Battalion of the 60th Regiment
« on: Wednesday 03 September 14 19:32 BST (UK) »
I found my 4 x great grandfather was the "Master of the Band of the 6th Battalion of the 60th Regiment" in Jamaica in the early 1800s.  Would this be the West Indies Regiment?

Hi I believe you have had an earlier reply re your ancestor and this regiment, all google suggests it was despatched via Cowes November 1800 to Jamaica, and disbanded 9th February 1818 at Portsmouth, all fit men into 3rd Battalion, as suggested formed from German troops.

No not the West Indies Regiment... but the 60th Regiment of Foot  (British Army). See the answers on your other thread for some links to more info

The link on the other thread is to two recods on Findmypast. One is probably for his father, who was a Drummer in the 4th Battalion, 60th Rifles. This John Wolff was discharged in 1783 after ten years and the Findmypast pages appear to be support for an application to the Royal Hospital, possibly to be an in-Pensioner. It is well worth buying a few credits as it gives details of his service in the war against the USA ending in 1783.

The second Findmypast record could be the one you mention, also born in Germany, who was discharged from the 60th Rifles in 1816 aged 44. He was discharged from the 2nd Bn, and the two pages does not give details of other battalions he served with. For that you will need to research the musters in Kew, and not available online.

The 60th or Royal American Regiment was raised in the 1760's I think. In the Napoleonic wars it had 8 battalions, 3 of Rifles and 5 of Redcoats. If you watched 'Sharpe' on television (extracts on Youtube now), at some point a few members of the 60th (red collars and cuffs) under their officer 'Sweet William' joined Sharpe's unit.
