I wrote and queried "(Dyer?)"

as in . . . . .

Ellen Adams (mmn Dyer) 1871 D Christchurch 2b 578
The other 2x would seem to be Dyers.

I thought you meant you had read "Dyer" on the image but were querying it because you weren't certain of the spelling

Just found a divorce record for Ada Lucy Adams (nee Derham) , co-respondent George Clark. The petition was filed in 1916, but decree nisi not granted until 1920. But it seems Ada didn't marry George Clark until 1933 until after former husband had died - I wonder why not?

Divorce petition mentions William John Adams works for J A Grigg and son, builders, so that's where the executor connects and why Ada Lucy isn 't mentioned.

Have just discussed my latest findings with OH, who has minimal interest in FH but a good grasp of financial matters. He said the reason for the delayed marriage is obvious - Ada was getting a regular maintenance cheque which ceased if she remarried or her former husband died.

Finally sorted out theses Adams families and some strange coincidences. The two Adams men who married the two Derham sisters were not related but they both had mothers called Elizabeth and fathers called Alfred!

Ada's husband: William John Adams' father was Alfred Joseph Adams b Wimborne, Dorset and his mother was Elizabeth Evans
Annie's husband: Alfred George Adams' father was Alfred Henry Adams b Walworth Surrey and his mother was Elizabeth Dillaway.

Hi there.

The two Adams men were brothers!  Two Adams brothers married two Derham sisters.
Father: Alfred Joseph Adams 1853--1881 b.Wimborne St.Giles.
Alfred froze to death on Roeshot Hill, Hinton. inquest held in Cat and Fiddle pub.
Mother: Elizabeth EVANS 1855--1921 b.E.Coker, Somerset. (my gg-grandmother)
Married: 18 May 1875 Highcliffe, Hampshire
Following the tragic death of Alfred, Elizabeth remarried in 1883 to William Hiscock 1860--1909.

Children:
Samuel 'Edward/Ted' Adams 1876--1915 b.Gus, Hinton. Highcliffe War Memorial
William John 'Bill' Adams 1879--1933
Bill married Ada Lucy Derham, 7 children, then 1913 Ada left and lived with George Clark.
George/Alfred 'Puffer' Adams 1881--1953
George married Annie Louise Emily Derham, 6 children.

hello and welcome to Rootschat. I must have got the wrong parents for one of the Adams men.

Thank you for the information.

My mother always said she had an uncle called Puffer, i thought it was a nickname for one her father's brothers, but it looks like he was her uncle by marriage. She mentioned playing with Adams cousins as a child, probably the younger children of Puffer and Annie. I've only got two for then so far, but only looked at 1911 census. Having two groups of Adams mmn Derham got me confused until I found the divorce records for Ada Lucy, which named all her children who were still living at time of divorce.
