Back again, with a slightly different angle.
John Dobson (born c1774 in Wakefield) married a Frances UNKNOWN somewhere and it might just have been in Scotland, but could equally have been anywhere!

BUT ... two sons were born ...

James Dobson born 1811 in 'Scotland' in the 1851 and 1871 censuses, Glasgow in the 1861, and Lanarkshire in the 1881.
John Dobson, his younger brother (the one that this thread is originally about) who - as a reminder - variously gives his c1818 place of birth as Scotland (1851, 1861, 1891) and Edinburgh (1871, 1881).

And, I suppose that there could have been other children born to this marriage ...

So, is there any record of a James Dobson being born in 1811? And perhaps the parents' marriage?
Any help would be appreciated from those of you who have access to Scots record information.

Hi,

There is also a Jeremiah Dobson on the England 1841/51/61 Census in Leeds.
Born in Scotland

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQGP-RXB

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SPM2-4V7

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7FB-K4G

On the 1851 place of birth is Scotland Dumfriesshire Sangaford. Could be worth looking at him as a potential relative of James and John.

Looby :)

Amended- Should have added - Sangaford is probably a mistranscription (maybe Sanquhar ??)  :-\

I agree, Looby.
It certainly looks like a possibility.
Thanks.

Right Looby ... I've explored Jeremiah and I don't think he's related. :(
It would have been lovely if he was ... James, John and Jeremiah!

This chap is an architect and I've found him from christening to John Dobson and ?? McCricick or a Mary McCrone in 1814 (neither of which tally), through the 1841-1871 (in Scotland) censuses and even worse, when he marries Ann Sawyer in Rothwell (Leeds) in 1844 his father, John Dobson, is a shoemaker whereas MY John Dobson was most definitely a cloth-weaver/tailor/draper.

So it's back to the drawing board, I'm afraid.
Thanks anyway.
