searching for records of Otterson surname in Ballimore

I have a 1900 U.S. Census that lists my great-grandfather's father as being from Ballimore, Scotland. I have not been able to find anyone named Otterson in the Census of Scotland. I think he might have been from Otter's Ferry, and it might be no coincidence with the name Otterson.

Any suggestions on where to look?

I took a very quick look at 1900 U.S. Census and didn't see anyone named Otterson born in Scotland 

Some of the same spelling variations you were given on the Co. Down topic will also apply to Scotland-

You can't post the whole image (due to copyright etc.), but you can post snippets to help with deciphering.

Alternatively, if you can provide some references to the entry so that we can find the original that way, this will likely help too.

Robert Otterson, residing in St. Louis in 1900. His birthplace is listed as Ireland. His father's (John Otterson) birthplace is handwritten and then overwritten as "Baltimore" but it looks like it was corrected (!) and the original was "Ballimore." The transcription says "Baltimore." I believe it was transcribed incorrectly.

I have a record of Robert Otterson's wife traveling to Carrowdore, Ireland to visit her inlaws. That places John Otterson living in Northern Ireland in 1895.

Well, it's no wonder I couldn't find the 1900 census entry- your original post said " have a 1900 U.S. Census that lists my great-grandfather's father as being from Ballimore, Scotland."

It should be Ballimore. It was corrected erroneously. It would not make sense that he was born in Ireland, but his father is from Baltimore. Also, the census rep. would not list a U.S. city in this field, right? It makes no sense. I learned long ago not to assume that the transcription is correct. Look at the image, it could be Balli- something - ore. Definitely NOT Baltimore. There is no record of him being born in the U.S.
