« on: Sunday 07 September 14 07:33 BST (UK) »
Have James Mcardle b.1853/4 with mother Sarah, visiting Fletcher family in Liverpool in 1861 census.
Have James and mother Sarah in Wallsend with Mary -16, and Hannah -6 in 1871 census.
Have James, wife Elizabeth and son Thomas in 1881 census.
I have no idea who James' father was ???
Any ideas?

Thanks Tim!
I had a thought and used FREEBMD to find a wife Sarah to any Mcardle. Came up with Peter Mcardle = Sarah Wilson 1852 Gateshead. Will investigate further ;)

On the 1861 census she is down as 'unmarried', well, ditto'd from the children unmarried above her.

The census record for 1881 on Ancestry has a comment attached saying that James married
Elizabeth Marshall in 1877.
Family Search Records have this marriage and it gives his father's name as Peter Mcardle.

Nicely found. Guess the unmarried on the census wasn't correct then and the Gateshead marriage to Peter we found was right on FreeBMD.

Another marriage on Familysearch.

Sarah McArdle, age 40, and Alexander McAlister, age 39. 9 Sep 1872, Newcastle All Saints. Brides father - James Wilson. Grooms father - Alexander McAlister

Alexander is on the previous census page to Sarah in 1871. In 1881 they are still in Wallsend, by 1891 Sarah is a widow.

Alan.

It seems that 16 year old Mary married shortly after the 1871 census was taken.
Free bmd has it as June qtr
