Completed: Thomas Steel, confusion in the census
« on: Wednesday 10 September 14 12:03 BST (UK) »
Good afternoon

I was looking at the 1851 census concerning an ancestor, Mary Steel, born 1826 in Crosscanonby, later married David Richardson.

This is her on the 1851 census at Wragmire Cottage, Petteril Crooks, Cumberland

Head   David Richardson   25
Wife   Mary Richardson   25
Son   Thos Steel   2
Son   Thos Richardson   4 months

And the 1861 census

Head   David Richardson   35
Wife   Mary Richardson   34
Son   Thomas T Richardson   12
Son   Joseph Richardson   10
Daughter   Mary Richardson   8
Son   John Richardson   4
Servant   William Packson   25
Servant   Mary Ostle   17

This post is concerning Thomas Steel, born 1849 and can be seen on the 1851 census. Its interesting in that this is the only census he appears on with his family, he is nowhere to be seen on the 1861 census, but there is a Thomas T Richardson, which may or may not be him

What happened to him? Did he die? Or have his name changed?

my thanks

s

on 1851 census the youngest child is not Thos Richardson - but Joh (= Joseph) Richardson age
4mths
Joseph appears on 1861 census age 10

It looks like Thomas T Richardson age 12 in 1861 census is Thomas Steel age 2 in 1851

On image 1861 Thomas' middle initial could be read as "S"--- maybe for Steel and his mother's married name of Richardson was tagged on the end

There's a baptism for Thomas Steel Richardson at Upperby, Carlisle in March 1849, parents Mary and David and 2 years later the baptism of Joseph in January 1851.
