ANDERSON, Alex'r m. 1831 Elspet Moggach Botriphnie
« on: Monday 15 September 14 02:23 BST (UK) »
Alexander ANDERSON married Elspet Moggach in Botriphnie, Banffshire in 1831 and they had three children.

In searching for family information on Elspeth Moggach I found that there are 4 marriages for Elspeth Moggach in Botriphnie beginning shortly after 1800 and with children born to all 4 between 1803 and 1835.

Did she marry someone else first?  My Elspet could also have been any one of the other three, but they could not all be one person as there are overlaps in DOB for children.

Lots of Alexander ANDERSON(s) born about that time.  Does anyone recognize the connection from their family tree?

Perhaps not very helpful, but I can tell you that Alexander Anderson and Elspet Moggach are not commemorated on any existing gravestone at Botriphnie.

Have you found them in the censuses? If you find the other Elspets with their husbands in the censuses, that will rule out a second marriage. If there was a second marriage, you might find the children of the first marriage with the family.

Hi Namma, there is a tree which has Alexander as 27 at time of marriage  Elspbet bn Leochel Aberdeen 1805, 26 at time of marriage, father John 1781 to 1853. I hope this helps you to find her baptism etc.

I'm sure you will have seen this but just in case. From Freecen 1841
Living Botriphnie,  Mill Of Towie (all still there in 51)
ANDERSON       Alexander    M       50    farmer
ANDERSON       Elisabeth    F       9
ANDERSON       James    M       8
ANDERSON       John        M       6
The children's ages align with the three children showing born to Alexander and Elspet Moggach. Next door there's a Betsy Moggach age 25. Sorry no sign of Elspet.

GR2 - thanks for the suggestion of looking at census records for other pairs and to see if children from earlier marriage living with my Elspet/Alex'r .

Tina Morana - I was excited when I saw your post mentioning a tree - but unfortunately I don't think this is the right group as the children are not the same - mine has three children who lived to adult -Elizabeth 1831, James John 1833 and John 1835. Thanks for taking the time though

Jennywren001 - yes, I do have the information re births, but not all the detail.  What is "freecen 1841"
Is this a free information page for census 1841 - how do you access this?
Thanks for helping.

Hi Namma,
You can link to freecen here:
http://www.freecen.org.uk

Banffshire census for 41/51 and 61 are available - Aberdeenshire 41/51 - 61 is being worked on.  Personally, I find the transcriptions at Freecen more accurate than most.

Thanks to the kind folk at Rootchat I found out about freereg (parish registers) - for Banffshire it can be very useful.

:) Jen - thanks so much for the quick response and for the additional information.  I have only been at this for a short time, and the assistance of experienced searchers is very much appreciated - what a great group to find.

I was excited when I saw your post mentioning a tree

Word of caution - always be very wary of anything you find online, like trees submitted to this or that web site. They are a good starting point, but don't ever take them as being correct. There are plenty of trees out there with information that is just plain wrong - you can find plenty of examples, like people having babies at the age of 8, or marrying their great-aunt, or producing large families long after they were dead and buried. Use online trees as helpful pointers, but don't regard them as a substitute for checking the original records just to make sure you are right.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
