Does anyone know when the Photographer "R.Lothian" was in business in Lauder,Berwick,Scotland?
His name was stamped on the back of a old photo.

Hi

Just wondering if this might be best on the Photgraphy Board  :-\

Can't find anything in Scottish photographers but there's a Robert Lothian, photographer, aged 25, b. Dunfermline living in Duns in 1891. Duns is about 15 miles or so from Lauder. In 1901 he's still a photographer but staying with and aunt in Dunfermline.

Added - if you could scan the photo (back and front) and put it up here, it is possible that it could be dated.

Attached are copies of the front and back of a photograph taken by R. Lothian, Lauder, Scotland.
The photo measures 2 3/8 inches by 3 5/8th inches and has square corners. It is mounted on light weight card stock with rounded corners and measures 2 1/2 inches by 4 inches. Hope this info is useful in determining the approximate age of this photograph.
Thanks, Dorothy

Hi ajjbc and Gadget

I am wondering if the 1891 entry you have found may have his age down wrong?

I saw this entry here http://pub47.bravenet.com/forum/static/show.php?usernum=4026477256&frmid=246&msgid=563950&cmd=show

Robert Lothian (Photographer) - I am looking for information on Robert Lothian a photographer who lived in Miller Street circa. 1873. His wife was called Christina and a daughter called Jessie Robina.

At least two daughters certainly show as born in Innerleithen:

1873 Jessie Robina https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQCG-9PX
1874 Isabella https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQCL-L4D

This looks to be the family in 1881 (as transcribed):

Robert Lothian 33 photographer b. Leven, Fife
Christian Lothian 35 b. Greenlaw, Berwick Sh
Jessie R Lothian 8 b. Innutiatham, Pebles
Isa A Lothian 6 b. Innutiatham, Pebles
Elizabeth Lothian 5 b. Kiggan, Lanark Sh
Agnes Lothian 3 b. England
Margaret Lothian 1 b. Dalgety, Fife

Address: Crossgate, Dalgety, Fife

This Robert Lothian married Christina/Christian Henderson in Dec 1872 in Dunse Berwickshire.

Iin terms of possible entries for him:

1871 - Dunse, Berwickshire showing as a brother in law to Duncan Davidson - aged 23 and a photographer. Born Scoonie, Fife.
1881 - As above.
1891 - Wondering Gadget if this is the one you have mentioned. Age the issue of course and not sure on marital status for him at this stage.
1901 - In Moffat Dumfriesshire showing as a Lodger. Aged 51, a photographer from Leven.

Looks early 1870s to me on a very brief look.  Even earlier, maybe.

No one has so far replied. I'll PM Jim.

Not an easy one this.
Rounded corners would date it after 1875 however this may be a copy of an earlier photo.
You'll notice the foreground is quite fuzzy which is typical of 1860's photo's.
Also the backdrop is more associated with the 1860's rather than 70's.
Her dress style doesn't give us anything & could belong to either decade.
The only clue I can see is that she appears to be wearing a dolman which was a sort of cape with armlets in & was about the only kind of covering a woman could wear that would cover a crinoline although she isn't wearing one.
On balance I would say this is an 1870's copy of an 1860's photo.
Edit:
Just spotted something odd. Her cape & bodice are fastened the wrong way, can you confirm this from the original?
If it's the same then it will be a copy from an 1860's ambrotype/tintype.
