I really appreciate this help,  I'll order the marriage cert for Sarah and William

Hope you've not ordered it yet....
as I was at the Beds Archives this morning & found the marriage entry on 12 Oct 1841...
William Toffield, bachelor, labourer, father Matthias Toffield, labourer - makes his mark
Sarah Stocker, spinster, father Francis Stocker, labourer - signs her name
Both of full age, both from Woburn
Witnesses ; William Bannswell & Mary Bannswell  ** or perhaps Barnwell ?

Banns were read on 19/9/1841, 26/9/1841 & 3/10/1841; both were of this parish

Cheers John

Oh good, John-P!

While I was hunting around yesterday I noticed a Stephen Stocker born in Eynesbury who shows up in 1851 in St Neots, with a wife named Mary and children with ages ranging from 6m to 7years.
(His age looks as though it could be 30 or 50, it's a bit hard to tell. Other censuses suggest a birthdate of c1817.)

This site, which is very useful for marriages in Bedfordshire (but not Woburn):
http://www.stevengibbs.me.uk/ParishRegistersPage.htm

shows a marriage of Stephen Stocker and Mary Plowman at St Paul's Bedford in 1840. Stephen's father is Francis Stocker, a labourer.

In 1851 Stephen has his widowed mother with him, Sarah Stocker, aged 62.   Which ties in nicely with the marriage that David found.

This is a great resource (Steven sometimes puts in an appearance on this board) covering marriages in Bedford registration district, as opposed to the whole of Bedfordshire.
