Hayes
« on: Tuesday 23 September 14 13:47 BST (UK) »
Hi

My GG Grandfather John Hayes was born in Limerick in 1830 his brother Cornelius (hope this makes it easier) was again born in Limerick in 1832

I am struggling to find anything further I believe John was Married in Ireland before moving to Whitby as he is listed as a widow the first time i can find him (1861)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What was the name of John's wife and when was the eldest known child born? Were any of his children born in Ireland?

Where did you get Cornelius' name from?

Limerick can refer to the city or the county and it will be difficult to find such early Irish records without more details. Many records for that period do not survive and of thise that do not all will be found online. In addition to all that, if tyou were to find a John Hayes with brother Cornelius it still wouldn't prove you've found the right family.

Does John's marriage list a father's name & occupation?

Hi

I am waiting for Johns wedding cert to arrive.  Cornelius Hayes lived in the same street in Whitby and also from Limerick, I suppose he may not be Johns Brother

Once you get John's marriage certificate you may know his father's name. Have you found any other Hayes from Ireland besides Cornelius living in the area? Have you tried researching Cornelius' family for clues? (maybe even a descendant is also tracing their ancestry). If Cornelius married in England his certificate might list same father's name as John's.

If either both John or Cornelius was alive at the time of the 1911 census (we aren't allowed to do lookups for it) it would be worth checking to see what they listed as place of birth (that one is more apt to list a more exact place than 'Ireland' or the county name.

Even if you were to find baptisms in Ireland for them the mother's maiden name might not be shown.

Just received the wedding certificate for John Hayes and Margaret leadley - Whitby 1868

John Hayes born Limerick 1830 Fathers name John (listed as a farmer and deceased)

Both lied about their ages listed as 32 when both are 38 - John listed as Batchelor when a census from 1861 suggests he is a widow
