The Vetter Family
« on: Friday 26 September 14 11:09 BST (UK) »
Hi there,
I am looking for any information on F.W Oscar Vetter, his wife Rosa and their children. I know that the family were circus artistes and later Music Hall Artistes. F. W Oscar Vetter was born in Berlin, Germany in 1851. I am not sure when he joined the circus but I know that he married a lady called Rosa and had three children. F W was known as Oscar and he has an entry in Turners' Circus guide. I know that in 1911. Oscar was living in London and was about 59 years old. I cannot find a death certificate for either Oscar or Rosa in U.K records. Did they emigrate to another country perhaps? If anyone has information about this family, I would love to hear from you.
Thank you

You may have to take into account that many people with foreign sounding names anglicised them during WW1, particularly German.

According to his son's marriage cert his full name was Frederick Wilhelm Oscar Vetter and he was not described as deceaced in 1912 at the time of his son's marriage

Richard Dimitri Alfred Vetter 28 Bachelor Artist St James Parish Kennington SW father Frederick Wilhelm Oscar Vetter gentleman
Louisa Cole 27 Spinster Upper Tulse Hill father James Finlay Cole comedian
witnesses Phillip Easton Verstose?/ Hilda Baxter/ Clarence Smythson/ Constance Smythson

there is a tree on a*******y which gives Oscars parents as Gottleib Ludwig August Vetter & Johanne Reineger both b 1821
this tree needs further research.

Merged (don't worry, it was probably just a server hiccup).

I can at least provide you with the French birth of daughter Rosa Clara Giselle Vetter which gives her mother's maiden name.

(she was born Reims 16 Dec 1880 and registered on the 17th)

This link may work (she is on image 342, bottom left)

Thank you jocose for the information that you were able to give me.  I have been searching for my Great Grandmothers' maiden name for a very long time and thanks to you, I now know what it was.

Also thanks to Jim1 who provided the details of my Grandfathers' Wedding.  Please can you tell me which census shows Oscar and Rosa's seven children.  I was only aware of my Grandfather, Great Uncle and Great Aunt.  I had no idea that there were more children who did not survive.

Thank you both. Karolyn

1911 census asks how many children in total;how many still living & how many died.
The answers were 7;4 & 3.

Interesting Rosa is described as a gymnast
In Shields Daily Gazette 3 Sept 1901 there is a review on the Tynemouth Palace Theatre- one of the acts is "the four Oscar Vetters, gymnasts"
