SOMERS family Roscommon and Galway
« on: Friday 26 September 14 15:16 BST (UK) »
My sister in law is trying to trace her maternal family and has reached the proverbial "brick wall"
The family is named SOMERS and the two people are EDWARD, b. 1856 (circa) in Co. Roscommon
and his wife BRiDGET, b. 1853 in Co. Galway.
She has the census forms for 1901 and 1911 and they place the family in Hollygrove,  Killeroran, Co. Galway.  They are shown as National school teachers.  The birth dates are ascertained from these forms.
However information regarding their birth,  parentage,  marriage and death seems hard to come by.
Family Search is no help in that regard.
I just hope one of my good pals on RC can point us in the right direction!

Bill      :)

Hi Dathai,
Thank you for your response. Because she has the census forms we were able  to establish the children and also the maiden name of Bridget,  which I negelected to put in to my original post.
Her maiden name was DOUD (and variant DOWD)  Your speedy response brought my error quickly to the forefront and therefore should (I hope) make looking for her so much easier(!!!!!).  I thank you for that!

Bill

The funny thing is there are plenty of Bridget Dowde's getting married in the right areas circa 1876 but none matching an Edward Somers.
It is quite possible that their marriage is not registered on the civil index but maybe a church record exists somewhere.

Hi There,

I have looked for a marriage but can not find one. There are too many Bridget's to narrow down her baptism.

I know you have their children but I don't know if you have the birth dates and middle names so here they are from the civil registration:
Mary Eleanor - b: 01-May-1878 -
John Francis - b:13-Jul-1879 -
Patrick - b:31-Mar-1881
Delia Anne - b:19-Dec-1882
Edward Vincent - b:19-Feb-1886
Arthur Walter - b:14-Sep-1887
Ignatious Peter - b:23-Jun-1890 - Informant listed as Mary Keogh, Ballygar
Michael Thomas b:04-Mar-1892
Martin Ambrose - b: 02-Nov-1896 - Informant Patrick J Somers

There is an Edward Somers baptized 06-Jan-1856 in ATHLEAGUE RC, Roscommon. His parents listed as John and Anne. Sponsors Walter Watson & Mary Curley.

Siblings christened in the same church seem to be:
John Patrick - 16-May-1858 - Sponsors Michael Watson & Mary A Curley.
William - 11-Jul-1852 - Sponsors William & Elizabeth Watsome (maybe Watson?)
Christopher Francis - 09-Oct-1849 - Sponsors: John Watson & Margaret Curley.
I couldn't find a marriage for the parents. I don't know if this is your Edward, but it might be worth following up.

Cheers, Holly

Hi Holly,
Thank you for your input which I will send over to my SiL.  The marriage of Edward and Bridget
still evades us.  Even tried rootsireland,  but no success.  Still what are brickwalls for!
I have nominated this thread as now being complete as the pursiit of the final bit now rests
with my S-i-L.  Once again sincere thanks for your effort and input.

Bill

Tried Summers Sommers etc??
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.
