Channel Island Ancestor
« on: Sunday 28 September 14 19:27 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have come to a halt with my Great Grandfather, Frederick William Cole, who was born in St Helier, Jersey in 1866/1867. He married twice, once giving his father as John (1890) and the second time as William deceased (1912). The 1871 census suggests his mother may be Elizabeth with a  brother Gilmore (who then vanishes into thin air!).

Any help you could give me with researching Channel Islands ancestors would be gratefully received. I live in England so can't go into the Jersey archives. Are they on-line anywhere?

Many thanks

I have also asked a mod to move this to the Channel Islands forum.
There are Jersey experts (and residents) who may prove helpful! ;D

Hi and welcome from me too.

Both Gilmore, 12 and Frederick, 5, are shown as born in Guernsey (not Jersey) when they appear with their widowed mother Elizabeth Cole (42 b England) in St Helier, Jersey in 1871.

RG10/5756/71/28

I see that later censuses show a Jersey birthplace for Frederick but his mother's version of events, as shown in 1871, may be more reliable on the point.

We then see Frederick Cole (14 b Jersey) in Minster-in-Sheppey, Kent in 1881 as brother in law of William Blake (34, Royal Navy stoker, b Jersey).

William Blake's wife Elizabeth was Elizabeth Gillmore, 26, spinster, daughter of William Gillmore (decd) when they married in Sheppey on 26 Dec 1872.  Witnesses were John Parris and Mary Gillmore.

Hello and welcome :)

Looking at Frederick Cole's possible sister Elizabeth - in 1851 Elizabeth Gillmore b 1846 is living as granddaughter at St Helier  with aunt Catherine Blake

John Burns 60 b Ireland
Elizabeth Burns    50 b Ireland
Eleanor Burns 11 daughter b England
Catherine Blake    21 married daughter b England
William Blake 4 Grandson b England
Ellen Blake 4 Months Grandaughter b Jersery St Helier
Elizabeth Gillmore 6 Granddaughter St Helier

A family tree on Ancestry lists John and Elizabeth Burns as having a daughter Elizabeth Burns born 1826 in Devon and includes a marriage cert for this Elizabeth Burns as a minor (father John Burns seaman) to William Gillmore of full age a Seaman on 19 May  1844 at Chapel of St Mary (Catholic) East Stonehouse Devon and with a daughter Elizabeth Gillmore born in 1845

Kay

Edit - Possibly Elizabeth Gillmore nee Burns in 1861 listed as a Mariners Wife and Tailoress which matches the occupation of Elizabeth Cole in 1871. They are living at St Helier (Could Edward Gilmore have become Gilmore Cole in 1871??)

Elizabeth Gilmore 30 b England
William Gilmore    9 b St Helier Jersey
Mary Gilmore 7 b St Helier Jersey
Edward Gilmore    3 St Helier Jersey
Hannah Whitley    24 Sister Widow
Henry Whitley 5 Nephew
